I love multi-chapter fic, but I agree with you on the turning out to be bad part. Some start out so promising, but then nosedive into bad!fic territory and then it's mourning time.

(It's even worse when the summary sounds incredibly interesting and well-written and then you click to read, but the fic in question turns out to be so terribly written that you can't help but wonder if they didn't have someone write the summary for them -or if they're simply good at coming up with premises but suck at writing the actual story. XP )

Ditto on both the turning bad and the summary things! It's like ok author, you clearly know how to string together TWO evocative sentences, could you please do the same for the rest of your story? Me, I wonder if some summaries aren't actually translated lyrics that I'm not recognizing...

I'm also irrationally picky when it comes to barely relevant interpretations of canon (à la YOUR YUNA IS PERFECT BUT I DON'T LIKE HOW YOU DESCRIBE SUMMONING. GO AWAY.), so yeah, I hesitate to get involved in longfics, but I've read quite a few amazing ones.

Yes, it's like they go: "the summary is the deal-clincher, once they are caught inside the first chapter, they'll read no matter how little effort i put in! Bwa ha ha."

Oh god, the pickiness.

If someone gets a detail of canon wrong, such as ages, dates, mechanisms of that world like magic, nicknames, anything, I click back and never look again.

(Or if it's otherwise flawless, i comment on the inaccuracy and see if the author corrects it. If they do, they're a keeper, if they don't and keep writing anyway, bye.)

That, too! I'm usually looking for gen ficlets that expand canon in one way or another, so finding a good fic that tries hard to explore something that is JUST NOT REALLY THERE is doubly annoying :p

But sometimes it's not wrong, per se... just very different from my acceptance of canon - sometimes I abhor the sequel, sometimes I've grown accustomed to my headcanon and I'm not feeling very curious that day... those kinds of things. I can't honestly say "You're doing it wrong", because it's just different ('course I can question their tastes for the sequel thing :p but it's not my place to contradict canon that is actually out there printed on paper/DVDs). Gathering that sort of information from the summary+tags+warnings isn't always easy. And reading 20 chapters just to have a character from said sequel say hi and join the cast is unpleasant to say the least XD

Man, this just happened to me too: I got around to reading a fic that had a really promising premise, and the first chapter was really good, then the second chapter just...plummeted. I don't know that it's necessarily worse quality-wise objectively or anything, but it went from being a pretty IC exploration of a dark concept to a really boring kinda-OoC cliche slice-of-life thing. I was so disappointed.
