idk why you would even bother reading the whole thing if you dislike the story and most of the characters :/

Tried to get into it for a friend. Also for Harry Potter troll, Marceline troll, and Juggalo troll.

Who is Marceline Troll? Vriska, maybe? o_o

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, Vriska. Color scheme/personality bits/hair/how they flirt.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I thought it'd be Kanaya, making the vampire connection...

hehe i always saw the connectino between marceline and vriska too, just sayin'. i always read vriska's dialogue in marceline's voice.

The most painful part. No way in hell I would've bothered if it weren't for friends who decided that I'm no longer worthy of talking to because I don't speak HOMESTUCKOMG

OP

I never said that. I believe the story had so much potential at the start as a coming of age tale about four kids who destroy their world and have to fight to reclaim it, while walking that fine line between being a child (still dependent on their guardians) and being an adult (learning to deal with the monsters themselves). Some of the characters are deeply engaging and show development over the story - Dave is probably the best example of this. Initially hiding himself behind a cool exterior and copying his older brother, he learns to find his place and even confront insecurities to reach the higher levels.

My problem is that the story ended up not being about that. It became about an alien race, complex time paradoxes, the ancestors of the aliens, some cosmic gangsters and evil overlord...it's all my opinion of course, but I find Homestuck to be an interesting premise brought down by flaws in narration and storytelling style. The reason I continue to read it, as I said, was to be able to fully detail both the good and the bad in Homestuck, once the full picture is in front of me. Afterall, if I reviewed it now, several plotholes I could point out might be resolved by the end or more flaws could arise that need special mention.

I'd like to read your review when the series is over OP. I agree with you because in the beginning it was really engaging but then the troll introductions really bogged things down. I wouldn't mind if there were just four more characters introduced but the fact that he went with the zodiac lent it self to having the whole spectrum; I just wish those other characters could have been better developed so I could care when they 'die'.

I can foresee the first sensible, in detailed criticism of Homestuck from you, actually. Hell, please write it and send it to me.

I still follow it, and I think with things Hussie does well he does them spectacularly. The problem is that the weaker side of his story telling are not just a bit weak. Right now you either have to love him completely or hate him completely, and I don't see Homestuck as either.

He's hell of a marketer though, I'll give him this much.

I'm coming at this from almost the opposite end from you, it sounds like; the only reason I got into Homestuck in the first place was because I kept hearing from my friends about these weird things called "trolls," and some of what I heard sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a chance. Then I realized that what I had heard was seriously misleading - I had actually gotten the impression the trolls were the main characters, but had to plow through God knows how many pages of archives before they even showed up in Act Five. Then, half of them got slaughtered in what looked like a blatant example of Hussie realizing his cast was out of control and he needed to whittle it down to size. There were also all these other random groups running around that I really couldn't keep track of - exiles, gangsters, etc. - that I didn't find particularly interesting and seemed to keep sucking up time from the storyline.

There is a lot that I like about Homestuck. I agree with whoever upthread it was that said Hussie was very good at characterization when he wants to be; the kids and some of the trolls (the ones whom he spent the most time on - Karkat, I think Vriska, Terezi, maybe a couple others) are very well fleshed out and convincing characters IMO. His world-building is highly imaginative and he seems to have a good handle on his world. He isn't afraid to do dramatic things to either his world or the characters (although this might be helped by the fact that he has so frickin' many of them). But at the same time I agree that there are some pretty serious drawbacks too. I would love to see a full, *fair* review of the entire thing after it's done, that acknowledges both the good and the bad. I hope you write it - I would love to read it!

Could you please link us to the analysis when you do it? I really would love to read it.
