If people didn't enjoy the story and were only in it for the characters, then they'd collect fanart or read fanfic all day. Anybody who cares enough about the story, even if just a portion of it, is in it for more than just shipping. Shipping may be integral to them, but reading HS - any part of it - isn't necessary for that. Further, HS is multiple stories that eventually become connected. If somebody likes one part but not the others then that's cool, I may not agree but they still like the story a little?? So whatever. Overall I think it's dumb to assume people don't like the story whatsoever even when they go out of their way to read some of it.
ETA: To clarify, I know some people read stories they end up disliking or actively dislike because they feel compelled to finish them, etc. But When it comes to HS and people only being interested in the trolls' affairs, that's different. They're still interested in part of the story - even if, unfortunately, not all of it.

Now, I don't mind people who got into it because of act 5, or who like the trolls best. No problem there. But goddamn it, the ones who don't bother going back...
There are so many idiots talking right now about "genderswapped" John and Jade (Jane and Jake) and they annoy the shit out of me because it's obvious to anybody who read the earlier acts who they are.
