Solution: Form a band
compose grim gritty dystopian reboot rock opera painting the characters as bedraggled warriors against an unstoppable (and competent) villain

I approve of this plan.

I spent so much time as a kid reading the comics (I still regret not keeping up with them when my brother stopped buying them), and playing the Sega games -- so I've always had a soft spot for that series. But oh god, the fandom.

You should try the comics again, they have been pretty good for some time now, if you don't know where to start I can suggest you starting at #160 since that is were the new writer started.
It might be a bit weird since at that time he was fixing some issues the comics had at the time but it gets better.
I can also recomend you the Sonic Universe comics, both are great.

I grew up on Sonic and used to be involved in the fandom 10+ years ago for quite a few years; did some art, wrote a few fics. It was even fun.

I still keep up with the comics (#225!), but the fandom? Wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Makes me a sad panda. ;_;

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been a sonic fan since I was 3 and it was the first fandom I ever participated in (although more heavily focused on the Archie comics and SatAM), but these days I won't touch the main fandom with a 9-mile pole. Way past uncool. (that being said, I HAVE met great fans of Sonic, so it's not universal, and I still play the games sometimes and I'm super glad that Generations looks like it might actually be good. I need to try Colors, too...)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sonic fan since I was six. We got a MegaDrive and the first game for Christmas in 1991 and I've been hooked ever since. I was involved in fandom back in about 2004-2006 and wrote some fics. I come back to Sonic when I feel like my other fandoms are boring and it recharges me when I feel down and depressed.

But seriously. Some of the fans are fucking scary.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I wrote this secret in my sleep. & I hate to say it, but I feel like if the cartoons & comics had been about human characters (not the games, that would be fucking terrible; we'd've had those dreadful 90s Burger King mascots for character sprites) instead of anthro ones the fandom would be ENORMOUS; same with Bucky O'Hare. As it is = furries, furries everywhere. Not even the kind you can have a decent conversation with outside of their fandoms - those guys left ages ago in disgust. These guys are nuts, & it makes me really sad, because the Sonic 'verse (the 90's incarnation of it, anyway) is so awesome. Feh.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. The concepts they present (the idea of being turned into a robot = losing free will but not your consciousness? That's "I have no mouth, yet I must scream" worthy imo) can be dark and the world is so vast and open to interpretation. But because they're animals, rather than humans, it's all labeled "for kids" especially since the use there isn't much blood shown. Not that this alters the fandom much - any fandom can end up batshit, it just seems that the Sonic fandom is very blind to the potential on offer and wants to make Tails' 507th brother/cousin who can use Chaos Control and has five tails and so on and on :(

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll never go near the Sonic fandom with a ten foot pole. I've seen how just being in that fandom can turn you into the biggest asshole and I've never even participated in it. I find it ridiculous so much self entitlement and rage came from some video games about some hedgehog who happens to run fast. It's fucking crazy.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is true. I have been in the Sonic fandom for well 7+ years and I have seen people enter the black waters and get eaten alive, only to return as a rabid, frothing zombie.

Needless to say, some of the professionals who work on the series (VAs, writers) are very nice.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
We should play Sonic together, OP. (And everyone else in this thread.) I like Sonic and I've met a few nice people and good authors in the fandom, but I can't stand all the negativity in the fandom. Just chillax and enjoy your video games, people! Is it really worth it to get so worked up about a few you don't like?

(Oh and I wish I could find more of the comics! I used to read them when I was a kid and they would mail you free issues if you bought cans of Spaghetti O's!)

[identity profile] itachinyu.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
just popping by to say I lold so hard at 'dick-waving contest'

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about fandom, but it seems there are enough people who don't want to be around the crazies that they ought to just start their own fandom or faction.

I mean all fandoms have crazies; some are more vocal/a larger group than others.

idk

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem I've found is where do you find the noncrazy, build up a place for them, keep it active and alive, and keep the noncrazy out? It's a tough task in any fandom. But notably in the Sonic fandom, I've seen people put all sorts of hoops for people to jump through just to be accepted as a 'full member' of a message board, which in itself is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
SONIC FANDOM MAY BE AS MUCH AS 91% AUTISTIC; News at 11

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
And autistic people are just *terrible.*

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Judging by your defensive response, there is a 91% of you being autistic.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
...Yeah no. I don't think autism has anything to do with the fandom being stupid, especially since most people can pull off stupidity without a mental disability. And that being said, autism =/= bad.

[identity profile] hyper-amychao.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much, OP. I never really participated in fandom (even though I've been a fan for about 20 years now) outside of a few close friends.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-15 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the Sonic fandom, although I'm not at all active in it as of recent years. It's got problems, but I find them mostly endearing. There's something nice and reassuring about all the infamy: some fandoms will never change, and to be honest the type of infamy the Sonic fandom has is a lot better in my view than that of some others.

You could always try making your own forums and setting up some rules and guidelines, aiming to make a happy haven for people who want the same things out of the fandom as you do, but then...well, it could end up being elitist and all that if you weren't careful, and it would only be any good if you could gather a decent group to kick it off with.

[identity profile] steamagent.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen to all of this. The Sonic universe has so much potential; I hate seeing the n00bs these days squander it.

Too bad you weren't on the internet in the late 90's/early 2000's (or maybe you were, but you sound like you're younger than I am *is an old fart*). Back in the day Sonic fandom was actually pretty legit, all the way up until the end of the Dreamcast era. You would have loved it.

SIGH.

:(

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-20 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I joined the party too late then :( I joined a forum for Sonic in 2003 but I was very noobish myself back then and seeing as it was my first time online, I got sucked into the dark since it was the example. Luckily I broke free of it, but I haven't seen much better for Sonic elsewhere
