Oh, brother. We have enough resources to go around, anon. The problem isn't babies, the problem is distribution. And that's probably never going to be resolved because there will always be people that consume more than they naturally need.

(I mean, seriously--do you really believe so many Americans would be so fat if there was a food shortage?)

[identity profile] royalbk.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
(Not that I want to get into technicalities with you but...what makes you think that what Americans are eating is actually called food anymore?

I thought it was 'mass chemical combo' disguised to pass off as milk/meat/etc?

xDDD)

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft, well, we're still surviving off of it. If we can do it, than the starving people in [insert country here] and the US could probably do so, too.

[identity profile] dark-puck.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
> implying obesity "crisis" has to do with food only

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But the USA as a country is still not starving to death (for the most part). Not to mention a lot of Americans have the luxury of buying food, forgetting about it and letting it rot in our fridges, and throwing it out. Heck, I lived in India for a while and the richer people there? Still have that luxury. I really don't think the problem is people having kids, there have always been people starving on the streets even when the population was a fraction of what it is today. The problem is human nature, and that isn't changing any time soon.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's distribution of resources. The lack of understanding about population dynamics in OP's secret (and in some parts of this thread) is fucking mind-boggling.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is "crisis" in quotes? Implying tons of obese people (with the number rising) isn't somehow a problem? Fat acceptance is well and good, but obesity is very unhealthy.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Rich countries having no shortage of food doesn't really mean that we have enough resources to go around though.

I mean, if worse comes to worst I'm sure Americans will be the last ones affected by the lack of resources, but that's because their prosperity is built by stealing resources from poorer countries that then become unable to feed their poor. If you look to the world as a whole there really aren't enough sources to go around, especially with first world countries consuming for themselves and for people in third world countries.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
because America totally doesn't come to the aid of ailing peoples in other countries, ever!

...Oh wait. They totally do. All the goddamn time.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
As they damn well should. But I don't think I've implied otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We have enough resources to go around, anon.

It's not going to be that way for long, though. The agricultural practices needed to consistently produce enough food to feed the world are not sustainable. Look into pollinator decline. We've driven most native bees to the brink of extinction and domestic honeybees are in serious trouble due to a combination of shitty agricultural practices big, greedy special interest groups like Monsanto are actively working to ensure won't be changed. What do you think is going to happen when 2/3 of the world's agricultural output disappears because the pollinators are gone? It won't be a problem of distribution then, it will be billions of people dying of starvation because there literally is not enough food.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then, there's your solution to the overpopulation problem.

For a less flippant/more serious answer: Then we need to work on a solution for that, instead of sterilizing people/banning them from having kids, which (as a ton of other comments have mentioned) doesn't really work. Either way, the problem still isn't people having kids.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's the solution. Too bad about all the other species that are going to wiped out in the mass extinction.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The world's going to end someday, no matter what the hell we do. We can try to do what we can, sure, and I think people should. Maybe it'll change something. Maybe not.

Arguing about it on LJ is definitely not going to change anything, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)

it's informative.

i bet a bunch of people here didn't know about pollinator decline.

i didn't.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'd heard about it, but not in so much detail. I'm glad I was able to find out more.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's informative, but how many people really look around in f!s for information about agricultural problems?

Also, apparently cell phone signals mess them up somehow, too. Last I heard anyway.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The obesity's not strictly caused by eating too much food, but by eating the wrong kinds of food--the food available to those with lower incomes isn't the healthiest.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
And about five hundred other interconnected issues--like most societal problems it's not got one cause.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nnnnnnope. If current population trends continue there won't be enough fresh water to go around.

It's horrible to contemplate but the OP's concerns are actually kind of valid.

Stupid thing to bring up as a fandom secret though.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
We have enough resources to go around

Citation needed.

Also, keep in mind that food isn't the only resource, and that people have gone to great lengths for resources that aren't vital to survival, hurting other people and the environment in the process.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-16 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, we don't have enough resources. Keep your head in the sand and something will come along and bite you in the ass. You're an idiot.

And if America would eat real food instead of processed crap, pus (milk) and flesh they wouldn't be fat. Yes, I am an American who isn't fat because I don't eat that shit.
