You know, it's funny how people who want their own reproductive choices to respected can have no respect for other peoples.

Well you know, normally I would agree with you, but I think it is really harmful to have that many children. Besides the fact that it's practically impossible to raise that many kids on your own (but that's why you have teen daughters for RIGHT) and it's not fair to the kids to deal with the repercussions of that, it's really, really fucking bad for the planet at time when we really do have more people than we have resources

So yeah, I respect women's reproductive choices but you know, HAVE SOME GOD DAMN FUCKING RESPONSIBILITY

Sometimes I really don't agree with you, but this? I very much agree. It's why I side eye that mom in AR so HARD every time I hear she's pregnant again. B/

yeah, and didn't her last kid nearly die from something related to her pre-eclampsia? AUGH. the human body can't handle birthing that many babies, jesus.

But they can afford their children and live in a country with a stable-to-declining population. How are they harming anybody by having those children? Resources and environmental impact are global only on a very large scale; in this case, that one family has basically no impact. It wouldn't be a good idea for lots of people to do what they did, but they're not bad people for doing it.

Except that they have several advantages only a few people have. Examples: they get money from their TV show, their home is declared a church and since the father has been involved in politics, they're children get free health care. Also, they're white, no way people would be this accepting if they were POC with 20 kids.

And one family will eventually have impact when every child is raised to believe in the same thing. They've been taught to abhor contraception and family planning. If all 20 children have 20 children of their own, that's 400 grandchildren. Even with "only" two children, that's 40 who will in turn be taught to have hcildren and fill the earth with God's little soldiers.

Well, those are some pretty fair points. I didn't realize they had declared themselves a church. That's kinda gross. I'm okay with the TV show bringing in money, because it's a legitimate source of income, but I'm with you on everything else you brought up. (Also I didn't realize before reading more comments later they were endangering the lives of their youngest children by having too many for the mother's body to support.)

I would still say that it's a person's right to have a big family if they want to, but I still hate religious extremism and propagation of the idea that contraception isn't okay. A person should be allowed to have a large family entirely by choice, and not because of religious or social obligation. And from whatever anecdotal evidence I've seen and read, large families that are large entirely by choice (large meaning more than four kids here) don't have all children that go on to have large families. My parents and their siblings have all had smaller families than they grew up in (my father's parents had three children, and between my father and his two sisters there are three children; my grandmother had five kids but nine grandkids - overall less than replacement rate for their parents, which would be 10 total grandchildren).
