He set up a plot on his father's life, which you could argue was simply so he could have the glory of rescuing him - he didn't want to earn that honour for real, so he faked it. You can say he was trying to be seen as trustworthy, but he never stopped lying and it was all lies to serve himself, to make himself look better, to make Thor look bad.
GOLD. *this* is the issue. he's petty and manipulative as fuck.
