Uhm well if you hang around people who actually listen to music (instead of most people who listen to a tiny percentage of everything that's out there) you'd find that my opinion of Evanescence is a pretty pervasive one

More common opinion =/= better opinion.

You're absolutely free to like or dislike whatever kind of music you want. But the idea that some tastes are objectively better really needs to stop.

For the most part, I agree. There are some things that are so terrible that they are offensive, but I don't think Evanescence is one of them. I think they are shitty, but if I met someone who thought there were really great I wouldn't think less of them. Also, it's possible to know something is bad but enjoy because or despite of this, and I think a lot of people need to recognize the concept of "guilty pleasures".

Ugh. What's the point of demoting anything that doesn't fit the textbook examples of "classy" as a "guilty pleasure". What's the harm in liking something without being a snob?

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. It's cool to think things that other people find terrible are awesome (as long as that thing isn't something ridiculously, undeniably really, really offensive). It's also cool to like thing even though or because you find them terrible, which would be guilty pleasures. There is no correct things to like or correct way to like things.

you're fighting a losing battle here, dude.

someday they'll grow up and cringe with shame when they think about how much they used to love Evanescence, kind of the way I feel about the Goo Goo Dolls now that I'm not an eighth-grader anymore. (what the hell was I thinking)

...or maybe they won't. Some people just have different taste, and some people don't outgrow their "bad" taste.

FYI, I've been a fan of the Goo Goo Dolls for sixteen years and Evanescence for nine years, I've still not "outgrown" them. I'm also (still) a fan of Metallica, Linkin Park, Muse, Paramore, Rise Against, etc. All I've heard called "mainstream sellouts" at one point or another (and in the case of Metallica, another and another and another and...).

I will admit, this is a very apt description of me. I used to ADORE Evanescence when I was around 13-15.
Then I grew up.
Now whenever I hear them I just laugh and cringe at the idea that I ever enjoyed their music.

It not even just their lyrics. It's also the music and her whiny, dull voice (that, contrary to popular belief, does not sound good live) and their whole public persona etc etc

That's why it was good to hear them the first time in my 30s. At that point you're sort of too old to care what people think of what's on your radio, LOL.
