My doctor and all health professionals I have asked refuse to refer me for a hysterectomy because of my age. And it's not like I woke up this morning and decided I never want children, I've been asking them for over a decade.

They still say that I might change my mind "one day". The fact that I'm not maternal in the slightest and have never wanted children doesn't sway them. I have been offered "sterilisation" but that it not 100% effective (like birth control) and I don't see the point of having a painful procedure if it will not guarantee that I cannot bear children in future.

That's really too bad. =( Them deciding for you what you want for yourself = not cool.

Maybe, though, they're just trying to protect themselves in case you should get upset in the future. It's too bad that we live in a culture where people are always blaming others for their decisions (not you obv).

Good luck.

liability worries very well may be part of the issue.

For example, that's also why many doctors are still unwilling to deliver a baby vaginally after a woman has had a previous c-section (after a c-section, there is a very slight risk of uterine rupture if a woman delivers vaginally during her next birth. Though complications are more common if she has had multiple c-sections), even though many of those women would most likely be able to successfully deliver their child vaginally.

It's not a legal issue. It's standard practice in the UK to refuse a hysterectomy unless there is a medical reason for it. My current doctor says they will consider it once I reach the age of thirty-five if I'm still having heavy, painful periods, but they won't do it on the basis that I simply do not want children. (And since contraception is free here they love to suggest alternatives.)

So I guess I'm stuck waiting another 7 years.

wow...

Heavy, painful periods and they still won't consider it?

That really sucks balls. =/

Nope. Not until I'm older. Every doctor I've seen has said that it's because I might change my mind about not wanting children. I think if I were going to I would have by now.

Well obviously you aren't old/smart enough to make your own life decisions. Also you're a woman that means you're dumb, and it must mean you secretly want to be a mom.

/sarcasm

This absolutely infuriates me. And you're not the first one I've heard it from.

Sounds like it's more about sexism than liability, tbh. Why can't the world stop trying to control what women do with their bodies? Jesus.

Why hello there, story of my life!

Though considering I'm perfectly content to die a virgin, my main concern is the extremely high cancer risk I've inherited from both sides of my family.

Removal of all oestrogen-producing organs in a young woman is a bad idea for other reasons - it puts you at risk of osteoporosis. That said, if you don't want kids, I'd say you have every right to not have them.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
This would be true if I were asking for a full hesterectomy but the one I asked for was removal of uterus and cervix, leaving the ovaries in place. There would be no immediate menopause and I would not need HRT.
