It's not about the population itself, it's about the distribution of the population. Majority of these baby stories take place in places where overpopulation isn't a problem. If these were taking place in more crowded and less developed areas I'd be a little more concerned, too, but not where most fandoms take place.

Majority of these baby stories take place in places where overpopulation isn't a problem.

Yeah, but some of them are set areas where the baby-industrial complex has a rather unnerving influence on everyday life. Plus, the US has the highest birth rate of all developed nations, which could lead to an unbalanced growth projection (heavy numbers in the young and old populations [dependants] with a dearth in the middle [who pay taxes to support the dependats]). That's what concerns me about the media's depiction of having children (not necessarily maintaining a family).
