I like both shipping and history (and sometimes I ship based on personalities and sometimes on history), and I've never noticed any problems or felt alienated. But I'm not super active, so maybe I just missed everything.

Inb4 the SomethingAwful goon-train!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-19 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahahahaha, people actually appreciate Hetalia solely for its historical content? What?

[identity profile] eternaliyah.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Not Hetalia canon content itself, but the framework it offers to say/include/comment on actual historical things in fanon. There's a lot of hetalia fanworks that just use the names/faces/general personalities of derpy anime characters, and then fleshes them out with really good research.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, they go "oh interesting idea!" and write fanfictions/make art/discuss it more historical-way than actual hetalia-verse way, like their characters aren't really that much like the ones from the comic or anime. They just use their names, some of the stuff from canon and the rest is their own interpretation of history and/or international relations

(Anonymous) 2011-11-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes

There was one especially infamous person of those types called ejsthespie

or: what happens when a 40 year old man tried to mingle with much younger women, while talking about how he despised every one of them for shipping m/m

(Anonymous) 2011-11-20 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
juicy! I need to look that up!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, not the historical content itself as much as the idea of personified nations interacting: retelling history as a sort of biography of a single person, the fact of being able to write in basically any time period and about any historical event with the same characters, wondering about how a nation's perspective on certain things would be different from a human's... It was what first pulled me into the comic. It's still a fun idea to play around with, Himaruya's characterization of the nations and knowledge of history isn't as bad as some people would have you believe.

Himaruya's characterization of the nations and knowledge of history isn't as bad as some people would have you believe.

I used to believe this, then I read the comic myself and it turns out that yes, it's just as bad as I was led to believe. Worse, in fact.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-20 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
so much for Hetalia fans waving their arms about going "OMG WE KNOW IT'S NOT ACTUAL HISTORY"...

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurrah! I finally got my time machine to work. But it appears I only managed to get back to 2008. Fuck.

Dude. Just post your stuff. Alienating fans who don't believe in a middle-ground is a good thing.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-21 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, the weird thing is that I've been lurking the fandom since 2008 and this year has so far been rougher on me with the shipping vs. history 'battle' than any before it, but I do know where you're coming from. Thank you for replying! ♥

(Anonymous) 2011-11-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
there is a middleground, you know. i think it's called 'canon'.

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hey anon, you'd be surprised how many fans feel the same.
It's just that they aren't the loudest. They're somewhere in the background (what's actually sad).

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
What I love best about Hetalia is not the history or the shippping. It is the crack. Don't feel alienated; whatever content you provide will be enjoyed by someone, so please post!

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh snap, comment fail! IGNORE MY EARLIER COMMENT. :B

though i agree with you- crack+hetalia=otp

[identity profile] jedishampoo.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why not? I read the comics, then history books, then write stories with stuff in them from the books and include smut. I don't think the divide is that big -- a few people now and then try to take a high ground that isn't so high and brouhaha ensues, and then stops. If you're not choosing a high ground, then there's no problem, really. :) Go for it.

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I so know where you're coming from, at least in the getting into fandom department. And then Hetaween happened. ♥ If you can wait it out until the next event, it's really easy to join in on the crack and fun and be part of the group!

But I don't really notice a diversity between the fans who like history and the fans who like the series? The only case in which I noticed this was From The New World, With Love.

anyone who says liking Hetalia makes you a Nazi is giving Germany WAY too much credit :P

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
The events are what elevate Hetalia from a standard fandom into something truly epic!

Anyway, in my experience, the *majority* of the fans are both shippers and history-nerds (or at least, interested in both to some extent), so I don't think it's as big a problem as OP is worried about.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you'd be surprised at how many people are into Hetalia for multiple reasons, anon. There are actually a lot of us who enjoy both the history aspect and the shipping. I'm here for history, foreign culture-related tidbits (from both canon and fandom), shipping, and culture-based humor, myself. I don't think you have nearly as much to worry about as you think you do.

[identity profile] sombreday.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I love to read historical or non-historical fics with or without shipping - I don't think the line is between history and shipping, it's more between the fans of lighthearted fluff/crack and those who think Hetalia should be Darker and Edgier. I think both sides can make quality works, and taking a middle ground would only mean that you're less judgmental than most of us. :) (I have a bias towards historical works, so I'm kind of judgmental. :$)

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-21 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I certainly notice that line, too, but for some reason, I pick up the history vs. shipping tension more, and so that's the one that really hangs in the back of my head and bothers me. Thank you for replying! ♥

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-21 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
OP returns from her vacation!

Hetalia fandom uses Tsunami of Support!

It's super effective!

In all seriousness, though, guys, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for replying and being so supportive. I feel far more confident because of it. I regret that I can't reply to every single one of you as I would love to do, but I just had to say this in the event one of you comes back to the thread to re-read. ♥
