I'm not in your fandom, but that shit annoys me almost everywhere. Color swapping an existing character and claiming them to be a totally original fancharacter is sorta lame.

I haven't seen too many OC ponies, I guess, but considering Hasbro themselves do it (i.e. all the blind bag toys), it's maybe more forgivable than in other fandoms.

Many fandoms I've been in have cutesy names for main characters. (Example: The Avatar (cartoon) fandom has the Gaang.) Yeah, it sounds silly but we like our puns, dammit!

Every fandom has at least one character that is essentially a recolor of a main character, sadly. I'll admit I'd love to have a pony character with Rarity's hair, but I don't due to the very reason you give.

I can't stand it when people do that either, and I also believe that it wouldn't be too hard to look at some background ponies for alternative inspiration, or even to google hairstyles and reinvent them. Some folks just like to make the excuse that they lack the imagination to come up with something completely unique, but I personally don't buy that.

Yeah I don't buy that either.
I mean... I really don't think someone have to draw very good or make an AWESOME design noone ever has thought of before but I really hate the ponies that "just look like twilight with a different haircolor". and when I find some of these OC's I just can't believe how many people tell the "artist" that it's a GREAT character.

I even hate the blind bag ponies. For me the "new" characters in them just look stupid. this pony named Surprise for example will ever look like "Pinkie Pie less pink" for me. can't take them serious as a character.

Recolours are always popular in fandom. Look at Naruto and Sailor Moon for a ton of bad examples. I haven't seen it much in the Pony fandom but I don't lurk that much so I can't say if it's more prevalent than not.

What's this blind bag thing about? Do you get free stuff somehow?

Blind Bags are buyable little plastic bags with one little plastic-pony in it. you can't say which one you get until you buy and open it. Hasbro put the main-characters inside of these and added some "new" characters as well which are just the said main characters with diffrent colors.

as you can see here they even recycle the poses. cheaper in the production I guess.

But Surprise (the white pony with the yellow mane) was Pinkie Pie's original design. So yeah she is Pinkie Pie minus the pink.

errr Surprise has been around for like 2 decades longer than Pinkie Pie, even her G3 version.

Surprise was supposed to be PP but Hasbruh said no son to reusing most of the original designs so FAP TO MY PINKNESS was transplanted. Original Surprise & personality are a bit different.

While I agree that I think OCs should have some effort put into them besides "Like Fluttershy, only green and blue" Hasbro has been doing the recolor thing forever. See - Transformers. Molds are expensive, and they know collectors will want to collect them all even if the only difference is color.

Just look at the original MLP line, for that matter. Stuff like this has been part of the fandom for the entire duration of the fandom's existence, and that's unlikely to change just because a bunch of newbies wandered in blindly.

sure but the secret is not about hasbro creating merchandise. expensive molds are no excuse for lame character design inside the fandom.
