Well that's a stupid assumption. I'm born and raised in America but my heritage is Central American. I grew up with a Spanish speaker in my home who could understand English so I didn't have to learn perfect Spanish. So while I can understand it like a native speaker would, I cannot speak it perfectly. While I doubt my Spanish is as terrible as Drake's (haven't played 2nd or 3rd parts yet, woe), no one would consider me a Native Speaker.

I'm not sure how populated Kansas is with latinos/hispanics but it's possible that he just simply didn't grow up with anyone that spoke it, and that would justify his "shitty Spanish".

And what the hell is "just an American"? Unless you mean stereotypical "Americans". We are a multicultural lot.

yeah the "just an American" thing threw me off too.

Like, is it implying that "real" Americans are the ultra white English speaking folk? because, what? Very poor wording on that one

Er...ok? Way to completely take my words out of context to start a pointless debate. I meant "just an American" in the sense that Naughty Dog haven't thought out his history/past/heritage/etc beyond "he's an American". We don't know anything about his past, his heritage, his family, etc. Just that he's a white guy with an American accent who doesn't correct people when they call him American. So he's either American, considers himself American, or Naughty Dog simply haven't come up with a more detailed background/heritage for him beyond "possibly grew up in Kansas".

It isn't a stupid assumption to make because Nathan Drake is a fictional character. He isn't a real person with a real family tree and a real history of ancestors of varying races. People are creating his backstory, and so far he doesn't have a backstory beyond "American".

Sure, he might be Hispanic. But he might also be Australian, or Italian, or French, or even have a bit of Japanese in him. Why? Because Naughty Dog haven't given us a backstory/heritage for him yet.

I don't really care about uncharted or this character, but why would he correct someone for calling him American even if he did have South American heritage? I know plenty of people with hispanic/whatever backgrounds who consider themselves Americans because they grew up there and don't see why they should tell people otherwise
