Or maybe I've been in less discussions about child pornography than you :o

I'm not sure I understand your weird sense of elitism about this, lol.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
what are you trying to suggest and what sense of elitism

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing at all~
lol nevermind.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah sure you weren't lol

no really, what sense of elitism? there isn't even anything to be elitist about ffs the internet is a shithole.

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It certainly is, which is why elitists are so ridiculous. But they do exist, and usually flounce about like it's something to be proud of, rofl.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
haha oh I'm elitist about plenty of things and I don't hide this lol

but having been on the internet for as long I can remember (which is at least 14 or 15 years) is absolutely not one of them!

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I just meant internet elitists, lol. I'm not saying I'm not elitist in some areas.

About the same here, and I'm not proud of it either. It blows my mind that there are people who are. I've met them. It's a terrible thing. Usually leave wanting to punch them in the face. I'm glad you aren't one of them, because the internet really doesn't need more megalomaniacs.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really even know what an internet elitist is tbh

I'm not really ashamed of it, I'm just not proud. it's just been a thing in my life for a long time is all. I'm curious to know how old you were when you first went online now :o (I'm 23 now so do the mathsss)

I've been involved in small and large scale trolling, taken part in my fair share of wank but these days I'm pretty chill about stuff. I actively avoid places where dickheadish people converge in large groups so my time online is rarely spoiled.

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just know that they're pathetic people. "I've been online longer than you so I'm better than you and know more than you ever will!"-types. Oh boy.

I'm 23 too. I think it was around 1998 when I first actually posted online, but I know I went on AOL-for-kids or something before that and played games because that's all my mom and stepdad would let me do, lol. After I learned how to navigate by myself I pretty much stuck to the same few websites over and over, mainly fanfiction and anime parody stuff to make me feel less ronery before I met people irl who liked it.

I think most people who get really worked up or angry about things are younger and inexperienced, so they don't know any better. I've never really done trolling (just not my thing) but outside of a few secrets comms like this I never really interact with too many anons or unknowns anymore. (I think the worst one is actually loli-secret, which is full of girls taking a frilly fashion waaay too seriously.) I'm not in any fandoms in particular atm either so I'm sure I'd be more subject to dickheads if so.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
oh I know they're pathetic but I don't really know what it is that they do! well, I do now but you know what I mean :p

I'm only guessing saying it was around 1998, it might even be as early as '96, I'm just not certain. I don't know much of what I did in my early days but I know in late '99 I took my first foray into trolling haha. then I discovered fandom in May 2001 (Harry Potter to be specific) and I've never looked back since then. I left that fandom way before the final book came out but I've been in plenty of others since.

all fandoms have a group of vocal and annoying fans who give everybody else a bad name ): depends where you go I guess, fans on livejournal can be really different to those on tumblr and so on.

I think a lot of people who get worked up, in my experience are either dealing with a genuinely cunty person (whether they're being mean, stupid, ignorant etc doesn't matter) or they just don't know how to recognise a troll. not sure age has anything to do with it, really.

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to recall those early days, haha. I remember thinking the internet was always going to be this silly thing that my friends and I use that would never be a big deal. Whoops.

Oh my, don't I know it. I was in Death Note fandom at its peak, which had the worst rep of any others at the time. I guess I was lucky, because most of the people I met were pretty cool, but I did see and get linked to some insane 'tards. I'm sure you know the pain, especially hearing what I have about Homestuck fans. (Most of which seem pretty laid-back to me but uhh...?)

Hm, you're right. Bad wording on my part. But I will say some of the most vocal fandom crazies at least are young and hormonal and not sure what to do with themselves. Not that I wasn't there myself for a while, lol, and not that older people can't be nuts. One of the Death Note fandom's most annoying and recurring members was almost 35, if I remember correctly. It's awesome to be in fandom at that age, but posting incoherent ramblings about your Sims to every other comment in every post is a little much.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
it's amazing and kinda scary how reliant the world is on the internet, and just telecommunications in general.

haha anime and manga fandom in general just seems to attract the crazies. I used to read/watch a lot but I never really got into one specific fandom because I would be seeing new things all the time there just wasn't time to concentrate on one fandom for long. I've been in and out of kpop for the past 4 or 5 years, while I'm not ashamed of that in the slightest I wish it didn't attract so many genuine idiots.

my current fandoms are Homestuck (duh) and touhou and I guess doujin music (if that can even be considered a fandom when all you do is listen to music by super obscure people), though I have a wider interest in stgs as a whole these days. I have avoided Homestuck fandom because I think most of the people in it are generally pretty annoying - especially on tumblr. lj fans are pretty cool so far. I only talk about it with one person, on twitter.

touhou fans... I only like a very, very small percentage of fans. people either think fans are loli lovers just because the playable characters are all girls, or that we wouldn't know a good stg if it shot us in the face. the small percentage of people I like fall into neither of those categories.

I don't really know why I'm so judgemental these days but I think my time in the HP fandom has something to do with it. I witnessed almost every major wank from 2001-2007. after that I just couldn't get too involved in any fandom and just decided to enjoy things pretty much by myself.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
what is there to even be elitist about..?

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I was confused.
You seemed like it was an internet failure on my part to not know what an abbreviation was, then went on to say you'd been on the internet longer than me, which is usually elitism speak.
Sorry if I misconstrued what you said though, it's easy to do online :o

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
lol what the fucking fuck

firstly, I actually thought you were kinda dumb for not knowing what it was but whatever. secondly, I said maybe. for all we both know you could have been online longer than I have.

thirdly since when is being on the internet for a long time a thing to be proud or happy about? trust me, if I could forget the things I've seen, I would. I don't think I'm better than anybody for seeing a man stick a jar up his bum and clench or pictures of people with half their body missing and I'm not weird enough to think that seeing that kind of thing is cool.

tl;dr my statement was to be taken literally and you should really read comments properly in future!!!!

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
also sorry I guess, for thinking you were dumb. I was just surprised somebody couldn't work out what it meant on their own, given the topic was about nasty shit on the internet.

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly just try not to think about it ever :/ It's the equivalent of sticking my fingers in my ears and going "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU."

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
even though I've seen some truly horrific shit in my time, I'm actually unfazed by most of it ): I'm more bothered by the fact that I will never be able to forget it.

guess we're both lucky that cp is extremely hard to find.

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've never had to run away from the comp and vomit or something, like I've heard of some people. Sometimes it makes me wonder if I've just become jaded or if I just have a higher tolerance. I tell myself it's the latter.

Isn't Anonymous doing something to track down a CP (as I will now refer to it) ring? At least with them, the internet has a beacon of hope for being slightly less terrifying.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've come very close to being sick on more than a few occasions. worst thing I've ever seen was this image that would get spammed every day by an anon troll on an lj community I used to moderate. I had to repeatedly tell myself that it was a squished duck egg just to cope with it. gore isn't even against the lj tos so I was not actually obligated to delete it.

I asked lj abuse if there was anything that could be done about it but they were like sorry we can't do jack. I don't understand why dick pics are not allowed, but pictures of people with crushed skulls are.

re: jaded vs high tolerance, for me it's both but with more focus on the latter maybe. as I've been more exposed to things I become less bothered by them - the power 5 is a great example. they used to turn my stomach when I was 15 but now they illicit no reaction at all.

I have no idea what they're doing at the moment, I don't keep up with their activities nowadays. if they are, kudos to them.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
also about people fleeing and puking, I remember reading some people were sick when they read that fucked up face hugger type birthing scene from the 4th Twilight book.

it was thoroughly disgusting but I still think it was an odd thing to get sick over.

Just gonna reply to both at once

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
LJ has some priority issues, seriously. There's a whole comm out there dedicated to just posting horrible shit, including a video of a pig being tortured and slammed repeatedly against a wall. One would think that kind of grotesque imagery is a little more scarring than an erection.

I'm the same way. I've seen a lot of parodies and such of them, some even before seeing the actual video, so that may have had some effect on me because my first reaction is to laugh, not gag. Try explaining that to someone who isn't online regularly.

There are many other reasons people should be gagging when they read Twilight, lol. I haven't had the chance to read the birth scene, personally, but I doubt it's anything new. I read Poppy Z. Brite when I was 13 and she wrote about vampire babies eating their way out of the womb and aborted fetuses on rusty metal hooks, but now I'm curious...

Re: Just gonna reply to both at once

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
is there? somehow I am not surprised. seriously though, dicks and tits are completely natural and normal and everybody will see them at some point in their life! I am fairly sure most people won't see mangled bodies as often, if ever. I don't have kids, but if I did I'd rather they see naked bodies over dead ones. for one, they're considerably less disturbing and two, they're easier to explain and talk to people about.

there are a lot of things on the internet you'd find it hard, impossible or damn awkward to explain to people who aren't online a lot. even to people who are online a lot actually. it's more about the sites you visit and the people you know I guess, rather than the time spent.

I read through all 4 books late last year to see how bad they were - they are so terrible you have to see it for yourself because it's impossible to truly convey it through words alone. I actually thought the whole pregnancy plot line was just very weird, a bit disgusting but nowhere near enough to make me feel sick let alone be sick.

maybe because Alien is one of my favourite films is why the scene didn't bother me. I first saw it when I was pretty young so I've had time to acclimatise to the content.

Re: Just gonna reply to both at once

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It was thats-so-gross, and it was really bad when I saw it. Pictures of a guy who had half his face/skull blown off and was still alive were the most recent post, and you could see the back of one of his eyes, down his throat and parts of his brain and ugh. Looks like the comm hasn't been updated in a while though, thankfully. But yeah, I have to agree, people treat sex and nudity like they're this awful way to ruin innocence or make people into perverts, but aren't people who understand their own bodies and normal perverts better than necrophiles or serial killers?

Very true. Sometimes it's pretty amusing to try, though.

I once read the description of Edward sparkling that was just a clusterfuck of thesaurus abuse, threw my hands up and said "DONE." I was a creative writing major in high school and the fact that bs like that gets praised, let alone published, just blows my mind.

Haha, regarding Alien, I was traumatized as a child by going on a ride at Universal Studios that promised to be about movies like The Wizard of Oz. Suddenly there was this section for Alien (which I'd never heard of) and an animatronic Alien popped out of the ceiling right over me along with drops of liquid from its mouth and a screeching sound. I thought it was real for about five seconds and nearly shat myself. The parts of the movie with things bursting out of stomachs and whatnot don't bother me but I can't look at the grown aliens themselves for very long before having to look away. Funny how that works.

Re: Just gonna reply to both at once

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
wow that's pretty bad. I think the worst I've seen aside from that crushed skull (which belonged to a child) was either a lathe accident or a clip of a man slowly being beheaded (with sound). really came close to losing my dinner on those occasions.

I don't understand why we're not more open about sex these days. bodies are nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about or to be hidden away.

first time I tried reading them I just ragequit after about 3 pages. tried again a week later and sped through them relatively quickly. aside from the terrible messages it sends to people, the sparkly shit is pretty much the least of the books' issues.

haha oh man the xenomorphs... they're scary because of their predatory nature and that they only care to propagate their species and eliminate threats blah blah blah. plus acidic blood! yeah they look creepy but their head also resembles a giant penis so I can't help but find them to be relatively harmless looking now. I admit now though, I find the facehuggers to be utterly terrifying.

I know it's not a proper prequel but I'm so excited for Prometheus!!
