Why are you posting this so early?

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
not early for me. 11:14 pm here. Usually secrets get posted at 2 - 3 am for me and I have to stay up at night to get here. (Italy)

But... Turkey Day holiday! In the U.S. anyway.

[identity profile] despatch-boxing.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
To my shame, it took me over an hour to work that out. *g*

I hope this is sarcasm... because if not, WOW. Thank you for proving that people will NEVER be happy unless he's posting secrets every hour, on the hour. WTF, people...

I thought the ayrt was curious rather than accusing. In fact, I was going to ask that same question myself. I'm not American and I forgot that it was Thanksgiving Day today, so I found it odd that today's post was earlier.

I'm curious about something. When you visualize things inside your mind, can you see the images clearly, as if you were seeing them irl, or do they look more like a collection of blurry colors and shapes?

Re: off topic

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Er, both? If I concentrate on it, I can visualize the image clearly but most of the time it's kind of blurry--like looking through a lens smeared w/Vaseline. I'm not a very visual thinker though, I don't think. I have trouble visualizing concepts in my mind when listening about them although I understand them when I read about them.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. I'm a very visual thinker and imagine things as I read them, but it's been difficult to focus on details and things looked very blurry to me. I was wondering if it was just me or if that is how everybody sees things in their mind.

Re: off topic

[identity profile] andtheunicorn.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The latter. I actually have a really hard time visualizing anything clearly in my head. I've always thought I was the odd one out, though.

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Me too!

Over the years I developed the impression that there is a wide range of visualization abilities, from eidetic/photographic memory, to more or less well defined pictures, to hit and miss memory, to blurry messes, to no mental images whatsoever.

But a few days ago I figured that I could simply ask other people and find out instead of wondering forever. XP

I imagine things really clearly, like I'm watching a movie. I thought it was common. :P

I usually put not a lot of effort into visualizing while reading something, so it's more a blurry most of the time. Though every now and then there is a scene or a detail I see really clearly... But it never the whole thing, only specific scenes.

Both; if I try hard enough and have some kind of source material, I can see it pretty clearly. I was adapting stuff for my film class recently and after some focus I had all the scenes/shots in my mind because that's what I needed for my assignment.

[identity profile] bondlesseye.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Unless I deliberately make an effort to zero in on something, it tends to be fairly.. not exactly blurry per se, but vague? Kind of like how if you read something in a dream you get what the book is about but generally not the actual words... that sort of a placeholder.

Tactile/kinesthetic/proprioceptive stuff, on the other hand, is extremely vivid when I'm imagining things. I have to focus a bit to get a clear image, but I always have a strong sense of what things feel like.

I sometimes see things really clearly when I'm dreaming, but I can't do it when I'm awake.

My mental pictures are never very clear; although my dreams can be crisp at times.

Is there anyone else who visualizes the lyrics while listening to a song - each word pops onto the screen in your mind as the song progresses like you're a karaoke machine?

I see things more often than not like if there were flashcards in my mind. The card is quite clear, but I only see it for half a second. My mind's pretty busy and I'm constantly thinking of at least half a dozen things at once. I've tried to sort it out a different way, but I guess this is how it works. The cards rotate and will come back around, but they only pop up for a moment before another one is replaced. If I'm concentrating on one thing then I will see it clearly, usually when reading, but the flashes occur more like zooming in on details. Re-reading this I sound like a mad person lol

For me, when it comes to visualizing things, it's like seeing a movie or a photo in my head. It usually plays out like a movie.

Sometimes I can even see memories in my head from different angles, or from a third-person perspective, even though it makes no sense for me to be able to do that. My mind just fills in the blanks and creates a full image.

There's one thing that I can't visualize though (and it will annoy me untul my dying day)...and that's characters in original fiction. I'm aspiring to be a book author, but If I'm writing an original story I can't envision a character's appearance for the life of me, no matter how hard I try. I have real trouble describing characters in original fiction because I have such a hard time envisioning them. :(
It's the strangest feeling, because my mind usually pictures other things with perfect clarity. I can envision a character's house (down to decorations on the mantle, the photos on the wall, the color of the carpet, etc), the town they live in, the situations they get into, even their character traits and quirks. But when it comes to picturing the actual character? Just can't do it.

There was a parade this morning for American Thanksgiving. I know this because I know the guy who won the balloon design contest, and he has spent the last month and a half freaking out over it on Facebook. So...anyone here see the parade and like the elf balloon? :)

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I totally missed watching the parade this year. :(

Did see some Christmas lights, though!
