With Susan Boyle there was this big thing made about how ~horribly unattractive~ she was though. Like DESPITE HER APPEARANCE she is so talented. She's marketed as this sort of hope for the common person.

This? Annoys the fuck out of me.

Look, I'm not saying she can't sing, or that I could do better (I'm a terrible singer) but Susan Boyle is not a brilliant fantastic amazing singer. She's good. That's all. Good, and, by the standards of professionals, mediocre. She made it big BECAUSE she was quote-unquote "ugly", and it made good TV to go "LOOK SHE IS HIDEOUS BUT OMG SHE CAN SING ANYWAY LE GASP UGLY PEOPLE CAN HAVE TALENT TOO!"

Which I'd have less problem with if she was either hideous or remarkably fantastic at singing.

There, I said it. :|

Part of Susan Boyle's appeal was that she was so ugly, though. If she was just sort of pretty or sort of plain she wouldn't be a big deal: her ugliness made her voice feel extra beautiful in comparison. Her looks are almost a gimmick or a novelty, and she does owe part of her success to them.

I thought she cleaned up nicely. She looks pretty after a team of makeup artist, hair stylists and fashion stylists got a hold of her. I'm not saying that she was unattractive before, but that practically anyone can be made up by professionals to look "sort of traditionally" attractive.
