At least you have one?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Read it again, OP says they can't think of one.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you're right. I guess that what you get when you've been reading textbooks all day.

:( Well, OP. I hope you find one someday.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure what to say to that. :( *Hugs*

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm exactly the same OP ): I think about this a lot, actually haha. One will come soon enough :)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, so sorry anon. *hugs*

I think there seems to be this idea that the memory needs to be a huge, significant, once in a lifetime moment, like a wedding day or a special birthday or, of course, receiving your letter to Hogswarts. But I don't think that's necessarily the case - the memories are just to help you produce the emotions you need to summon the Patronus, but they're not a specific requirement for the spell. They're just an aid, a teaching method. So if you can recall any time you laughed until you cried (even if it was just at a tv show or whatever) or a song that uplifts you or anything like that, if you could let yourself get swept up in that emotion, then you'd be able to summon a Patronus. After all, Harry doesn't have to search deep inside himself for a happy memory each time, it's only when he's learning and he doesn't know how to create that emotion without the guide of a memory.

I guess what I'm saying is, it's the little things that can make us happy enough to glow, you don't always need a Significant Moment to focus on, and so I hope you have at least one small moment you can recall, one experience or film or image that always makes you smile, that can help you stay positive or at least happily distract you when things seem most difficult.

I don't think that your "happy thought" has to be anything revolutionary, it just has to be real to you. It doesn't have to be this detailed, concrete memory of the Best Thing Ever, it just has to be something that made you genuinely happy, like a childhood friend or a family dinner. I'm sure that you have something, OP. It's in there, I promise.

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP! But I think that's more that I don't have strong emotional reactions to anything.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I kinda dislike the thing you see in media where everyone has some big, defining... thing, good or bad (see also: The "take away your pain" bullshit from Star Trek V). Yes, sometimes there are major events which shape our lives; but most people, even people who've experienced those major things, have a lot of OTHER things which also contribute to who they are, what they do, etc. And actually, I'd be willing to bet a LOT of people don't have one big, huge, major "OMG THAT WAS AWESOME" event in their lives, (nor do they have one big, huge, major "OMG THAT WAS TERRIBLE" event).

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
me neither :/

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither OP. :( Even my most happiest memories are tainted with sadness. Like the memory of when my parents took me to Disneyland. It's a lovely memory but I can't think about it without also remembering my brother and sister feeling bitter towards me because they didn't get to go and also that my folks divorced a couple of years later and pretending to be happy for our sakes.

Best memories I have are probably on par with Harry's "first time I rode a broom" memory which didn't seem to work so good. :P

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that simple. I don't know what the "happiest moment in my life" was, either. My life is full of little bits and pieces of happiness, but you can't focus on that...

[identity profile] otaku-attack.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you feel that way anon. If it helps though, I think it doesn't always have to be a huge moment in your life--there are times where it's shown in later books that just thinking about his friends, imagining Ron and Hermione's smiling faces in his mind was a happy enough memory to get his patronus to work. As long as the memory brings you happiness in some way, whether it's a huge event or just thinking about a friend or family member you have that you love a lot, then it could possibly work.

[identity profile] micans.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh anon...I have a terrible memory. Not something I can really explain, but I feel like things are just constantly slipping through the cracks. I guess I know how you feel, because if put on the spot I couldn't think of anything either :(

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you have many of them someday soon, anon.

[identity profile] torakaka.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
You can thank your brain's chemistry for that.

My head canon is that Harry had to have such a happy memory because he life had been generally terrible so far. The Dementors affected him more, so he needed a happier memory. Hermione and Ron probably had memories like everyone else and they still managed.

If you don't have those, though, I'm truly sorry OP.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I know what you mean. But maybe it's the sort of thing that really only comes in the moment--like, when you're desperate, the first thing that pops into your mind is significant. Just like we don't really know what our boggarts would be because it's about a deep-seated fear. IDK.

[identity profile] marumae.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've thought the same thing OP, quite a lot actually. :\
