It *is* kind of sad, isn't it? Though i'll admit i've written one. But she was a big part of his life, even if not a big part of the show.

But aside from being Sam's girlfriend at one time we know nothing about her. Not saying people shouldn't love her but saying they should "always" include her in their stories is like saying Cassie should always be mentioned as part of Dean's past.

I kind of agree. I mean, I appreciate it when people mention or include her (especially if it's an AU or something - little details like that can be fun!).

But IMO, she was more of a symbol than a person within the show; she didn't have much of any characterization, so she was basically a symbol of the normal life Sam wanted. When she died, he was devastated and obsessed with getting revenge not just because he loved Jess and she had died (which, don't get me wrong, I don't doubt), but also because her death symbolized the loss of that "normal" life for him, forever. Jess in and of herself is less "important." Part of this is shoddy writing - the writers on SPN are pretty obviously sexist and didn't think much of failing to develop this character into anything beyond convenient shorthand for the life Sam wanted and lost, but part of it is the almost subconscious way that that is what she is and means for Sam as well - he loved her, yes, but he also sees her in a way (and perhaps only after her death, but I'd have to rewatch the pilot, etc.) as that symbol, something/someone that means a specific thing to him.

But yeah, I don't think anyone should feel like they have to include Jess, particularly because of the above. Especially if it's an AU, or very late in the series, or something.

Maybe it's because I've never been a part of the Supernatural fandom, but isn't it possible in an AU that Jess never existed? Or even that Sam never existed? It is an alternate universe, after all, or am I just being ignorant about the nature of Supernatural fic?
