As stupid as it sounds, I don't think I would have grown up into the supporter I am today if I hadn't discovered yaoi as a young teen.

I have to second this. The way my invironment behaved about homosexuals when I was younger was not exactly hateful, but still it was all about them being different and a little weird and silly, but you somehow had to get along with them.

I didn't think much about gay rights back then and thought being gay was very rare and somehow abnormal.

Then I discovered slashfic.
I became "interested", changed my opinions and started to read a lot about LGTB rights.
And then, 10 years later, I fell in love with a girl who's my life partner now <3

I probably would have tried to suppress my feelings towards her if it wasn't for slash "getting me into that direction".
I would have been uninformed and scared when I first discovered I had fallen for a person of the same sex. Sounds really pathetic, I know.

I agree. I would never have been able to accept that I'm gay if I hadn't discovered yaoi and its associated fandom. I probably would have killed myself.

...Yeah. I was a pretty homophobic 12 yr old back then. Holy god I was a huge prick and I often would comment on how nasty and sinful guys being together are and I would rage when I see yaoi fanfics just because it's what I was taught at a young age. Fortunately after getting into yaoi I got to know other open minded people and I slowly recognized that there are gay people out there and they have feelings too.

AYRT

God yes, I vividly remember being so outraged by Shinji/Kaworu and Uranus/Neptune. I remember complaining to a friend that IT'S JUST UNNATURAL and THEM JAPANESE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY. lawl.

Honestly me too. I had no idea that loving someone of the same gender was even a thing before I discovered slash and, at first, I was really grossed out. Reading slash helped me to realize there's nothing wrong with homosexuality and that they deserve the same rights as everyone else. Without having read slash so much, I think I would have had a much harder time accepting it when I realized I was bisexual myself.

Exactly. Getting into fandom in when I started college made my perspective on this issue flip 180 degrees. Having internet access in general has helped me become more open-minded, tbh.

Same. I was a little pro-life republican in high school and I feel like the only reason I was for gay marriage was thanks to reading slash. After I went to college and started learning about politics, and especially thanks to the '08 election when I decided to get active politically, I started reading news articles and blogs and ontd_political here, and like you said, it completely changed my perspective 180 degrees on a LOT of things, for the better.

Same, and I certainly wouldn't be okay with my own queerness. Growing up in a largely Baptist community in the Bible Belt is not exactly conducive to one getting an education about anything outside of heteronormativity without internet access, and I likely wouldn't have even sought out the information if I hadn't been introduced to slash fiction as a preteen. I'd like to think that being involved in fandom in general and finding out about RL issues through it has made me a better person.

Yeah.

It's possible I would have grown more accepting in college, but when I was younger I wasn't even aware there were other worldviews about homosexuality than my own parent's digusting bigotry about the issue. Homosexuals are all godless perverts who choose to live that way and God punishes them with diseases? Okay. What do I know. I'm a kid.

...Only, a kid with an internet connection. And slash fandom. Where I met many gays and lesbians that changed my mind about the issue years before my real life experiences would have done the same.
