Would people like me better if I wrote hetero porn? Would that change things? It's just porn. I care about gay rights - my writing is an extension of what I like. Growing up, I had almost nothing to read that dealt with homosexuality (mostly having to do with the fact that I didn't know where to look, as it turns out). Being able to do that in this day and age fills me with joy, and I want to ensure I can do so in the future. And it's not just porn I write about; it just happens that that's what many people pay attention to.
I live in a country, where homosexuality is widely accepted. Not widely supported, but accepted. There's not much I am able to do when gay rights are involved, but sometimes when the situation does present itself, I'm sure to seize it. I've gone against friends, family and even co-workers because I support gay rights. My contributions may be small, even insignificant, but who gets to say I'm just "pretending" to support gay causes - based on nothing but the assumption that I write for self-gratification?
FFS, one of my country's writers just received 30 000 euros as prize money for writing lesbian porn for teens. The reception? Positive. Why? One of the reasons being that some people said the book could prove to be very helpful for a confused teenager. Someone, who's struggling with their own sexuality. Or someone, who's deciding if they want to acknowledge homosexuality, and maybe even support it.
I'm not just a yaoi fangirl without a cause. I'm a yaoi fangirl with a cause.
