Yeah, I think people misremember Martha's season for the most part, and suddenly one or two moments get remembered as Martha ~always~ being jealous of Rose or ~always~ complaining that the Doctor didn't love her etc etc. I got into the show after s3 had already aired, so I marathoned the whole season in a couple days, and sometimes I wonder if that had an effect on how I feel about Martha. It always felt like a coherent story to me with a purpose that was definitely not "Martha sux because she's not Rose!!!", but maybe watching week by week would've made it harder to see, idk.

I think marathoning definitely helps to show the strengths of her character, I think it's also helpful to do it with a detachment from Rose, I think a lot of people were really heartbroken after Rose left and were not ready for a new companion who was in love with the Doctor.

I really like a lot about her though, I liked how in the first episode the Doctor really noticed her for her cleverness, and she did stand up to the Doctor a lot even though she had a huge thing for him. Plus her ending was just the best of new series companions so far, she proved that she was independent and sensible and it gave her the chance for a happy ending.

And even though Donna is my favorite companion, series 3 is actually my favorite of New Who, partially because of Martha, but I also liked a lot of the stand alones (Human Nature/Family of Blood being some of my favs ever) and the Masters return had a lot to do with that too.

Yeah, I think part of the reason I was able to appreciate both Rose and Martha was because when I started watching I'd a) seen Martha in an episode first ("Blink", though it as a bit part) and b) had already read that Rose was coming back in season 4. So as much as I liked Rose and Doctor/Rose, Martha didn't really come across as a replacement or a "threat" because I knew Rose's story would be picked up again. I liked both Rose and Martha quite early on in their seasons. Actually it was Donna it took me a long time to warm up to, and now she's probably my favourite as well.

I think Martha's story is pretty well done over all to be honest, which includes the unrequited love arc. But it's really a shame that all Martha's better qualities get overshadowed by "ugh she loved the Doctor".

I love series 3! It has some weak episodes, but it also has a lot of my favourites, like Human Nature/Family of Blood.
