Re: Whoops, clicked the wrong button.

In general, I guess. There's something about the formatting that doesn't work for me. I'm pretty much only into live action and western animation.

I get that they're not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm surprised you think comics as being inherently dumb. Sure, there are plenty of dumb ones, but that's true for any medium.

Have you tried things like Maus or Persepolis or Blacksad? I think their discuss certain issues in ways no other medium could. While they don't all appeal to me aesthetically, I can still recognise their value.

Okay, I will admit and apologize for generalizing. I'm sure there are some out there that are not dumb, but the likelihood of me giving them a shot is pretty slim. Or maybe I will? I really don't know. There isn't a comic book store in my city as far as I know so I may never find out how I truly feel about them.

You might have been bombarded by now by others, and if so, I apologize, but have you tried webcomics? Some of them are pretty good, like Gunnerkrigg Court, The Meek, and The Abominable Charles Christopher, and, mediocre plot or not, the things that Hannah Is Not A Boy's Name did with paneling and typography were at least interesting to look at.

There are some short finished webcomics out there, too. I personally like this one a lot: http://emcarroll.com/comics/faceallred/01.html

Oh, looks interesting, thank you for the link!

Oh, oh, another rec:

Minus

It's wonderfully surreal at times, and the attention to color and detail in some of the paintings is incredible.

I don't know how close you are to a Barnes & Nobles, but most of them, if not all, have a decent sized section for graphic novels and manga, and they tend to carry more literary options.

Some of the more "novel" format ones can be found in chain bookstores. I know Barnes & Noble has Maus, and I don't think it's even shelved with the comics--last I checked, it was shelved with...either the historical fiction or the speculative ficition, I think? But yeah, you should totally be able to find some of them at any bookstore, or even at your local library, should you ever be so inclined.

If not? That's totally cool too. To each their own. ^^
