Sometimes I just wish that slash/yaoi fans cared as much about trans issues as they did about gay issues

Because all the news stories I keep reading about violence against transpeople bothers me and I don't see as much outrage about that in yaoi fandom as I do about gay rights issues like gay marriage (not to say that those aren't important)

I'm disappointed by the lack of concern and awareness of trans issues, in general. I was doing some stuff for the transgender day of remembrance this year, and it really brought home how little awareness there is of trans issues compared to gay and lesbian issues.

It's a shame there isn't more awareness in fandom, because I think fandom can be a big source of exposure for people. You can see and hear about things in fandom that might not come up in your real life or in the media.

Probably because, like media in general, trans people get very little exposure and even less as something that isn't the butt of a joke or a shocking penis reveal.

There was a love letter written to the Thor fandom on AO3 a few days ago touching on this, and I must say, as a trans* person? I agree with it. The Thor fandom has been astoundingly receptive of trans* and general gender issues, which is...pretty damn awesome. I mean, it's a small step, but it IS a step in the right direction.

IMO, though, we need more stuff like the trans* fic big bang that happened over on Dreamwidth...when was it, last year? I don't remember. That was GREAT, though.
