Olive skin doesn't necessarily mean non-white. Given that her sister looks Aryan, it's not likely that their father was a POC and we know her mother wasn't. That said, I think the fact that the casting call specified a white actress is ridiculous; it's really not that important except in the case of district 11, where the characters should definitely be black for the sake of the book's slavery parallel.

Very true, but I think it's a counterpoint to the ridiculous argument that some people are making, i.e. Cinna must be white because the white characters' skin color isn't described in the books, whereas the POC characters' skin color is. Katniss' skin is most definitely described in the books, and since the movie decided to go with her as white...

Okay, I definitely see what you're saying, and the "no skin color description = white" mindset is ridiculous. TBH I imagined people from the seem as more or less looking like Melungeons, especially since it's set in former Appalachia and they're described as swarthy/olive-skinned. But really it shouldn't matter at all and it is pretty annoying how blonde the main cast is.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I too imagined Katniss as POC. Then again, I concede that it wasn't made 100% clear either way. But at the very least, POC actresses should at least have had the CHANCE to audition instead of being shut out entirely.

Yeah, for sure. I'm fine with them casting a white actress, but NOT with them only considering white actresses for an ambiguous part.

but then... how odd would it have looked when a non-white actress runs up to take the place of the pasty little blond girl in the reaping? It would take an awful lot of exposition to explain how that happened-- which there's not time for in the movie. And if that had been the case, it would have been brought up in the book as well.

Um, speak for yourself. I'm 100% hispanic and my family ranges from olive skin, dark haired and dark eyed to light skin with blond hair and green eyes. It's not that strange. It's not all "white/black", people.
