Yeah, that can be how it feels. And it's hard to get a handle on it, because it's really easy to dismiss it, like you said (and as Allie did) as a personal failure to not be sad and to do things. People who don't know any better will sometimes try to tell a depressed person that they should just get out of the house more! Or cheer up and think of how good they have it! But for a person who is depressed it's not just matter of "cheering up" and your mind may be kind of primed to accept personal responsibility for it because hey, other people manage not to be sad for no reason.

[livejournal.com profile] thesaneminority has some good advice. Talking to a good therapist can be very helpful, and someone who knows what they're doing can show you how to break negative thought patterns, or help you find medication if you need it, or just listen.

Thank you. I'll think about seeing a therapist, but it's going to be a really hard step to make from dismissing it all my life.

It always is. I'll be honest, I haven't been to see one since I was in high school and there's always a reason why now's not a good time, blah blah. It's hard. There's a good chance you'll try to talk yourself out of it without realizing it. But even just acknowledging it can be a big help, because at least you know there's a reason and it's not beyond hope.

Best of luck to you. :D
