(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 12:58 am (UTC)(link)I can't say "No, seriously, go talk to a doctor" because I don't know what that means to you and whether or not it would make it worse; you know that better than I do. But there are ways to manage it. I started keeping up on spoilers when available because I found that learning about and discussing things I disliked ahead of time made it much easier to handle. I also try to wait until a new book, series, or film has been out for a while so that I can judge whether or not it's something I can deal with (this is often doable without being spoiled, or at least not spoiled heavily, when impressions are available online). Please try to take it slow and find ways that work for you, even if it's frustrating to not be able to just outright absorb things without potentially feeling worse. I've found over time that the more I figure out ways to brace myself and enjoy things at my own pace, the less the anxiety affects me when trying new things. Even just putting down the book or turning off the movie and taking a breather to think can help.
Please don't hurt yourself. And please seek help in finding someone you can trust to talk to. It doesn't have to be a doctor.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)OP, if you don't mind my butting in, you can visit the TV Tropes website and see if they have a page for the shows and movies you are interested in watching. If there is depressing or disturbing stuff, the TV Tropes page will usually mention it.
You can also browse through the website to find genuinely happy and uplifting works to try.
I've been there, and I assure you that having that little happy thing to see you through the day becomes the thing that sees you through the week, and then the month, and then the year, and so on until you've built up enough strength inside yourself to keep going.
