Clearly, the people getting upset about bigotry are the problem here.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 05:39 am (UTC)(link)FYI, I was more referring to their use of "overprivileged dirtbag". Because you know, making people ashamed of something they don't have any control over doesn't make you an ass. Nope. Not at all.
And here, just in case you don't understand what I'm trying to say, as you inevitably won't just to start shit: Most of the time, someone's privilege is something beyond their control.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 06:07 am (UTC)(link)THOSE POOR PRIVILEGED PEOPLE.
HOW WILL THEY COPE WITH BEING TOLD THEY'RE PRIVILEGED AND ALSO DOUCHEBAGS.
HOW. WIll. THEY. COPE.
So what if it's beyond their control? Being a douchebag surely isn't, and besides, why shouldn't marginalized people be allowed to be angry at the people that make them a marginalized group?
Try reading this, for example. http://www.nathanielturner.com/whiteantiracistsopenletter.htm

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 06:20 am (UTC)(link)I like how having privilege automatically makes someone a douchebag, apparently. Looks like you missed my ENTIRE POINT. Good job!
FYI again: a lot of people don't even mind being made aware that they have privilege. You're kind of being the douchebag when you feel it necessary to throw it up at every moment for anything ever.
"So what if it's beyond their control?"
Missing my point entirely I see, nice reading comprehension you have there. My point is, making someone ashamed for something that they can't really have a say in is a real dick move. Making someone aware of their privilege is one thing, but calling them all DIRTBAGSSS because of it is shitty.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 06:29 am (UTC)(link)People with, for example, straight privilege are, by default, oppressors of gay and bisexual people. They can't help having privilege, but surprise! Gay and bisexual people can't help not having privilege. And the fact that straight people do have privilege and that their unearned, not-their-fault-they-have-it privilege is what's keeping LGBTQ people down, can make people resentful.
Add to that the fact that straight people do quite often make ignorant or homophobic remarks or engage in homophobic behaviour, usually without realizing they're doing so, and will usually get upset if you try to point that out, and yeah, it makes a hell of a lot of sense to just write the whole lot of them off as ignorant douchebag bigots. Because they are. They might not mean to be, but they are.
But, I mean, sure. You're right. The hurt feelings of privileged people over being told that they are assholes because they are privileged is so much deeper and more important than the hurt feelings of marginalized people that have to deal day to day with being ignored, othered, fetishized, objectified, mocked, hated on, rallied against, threatened, and otherwise being oppressed. By privileged people.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 06:52 am (UTC)(link)Spoiler alert: I didn't. Imagine that.
I also read your linked article, yes; in which I find a few objectionable things.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)Sums up the whole Orwellian mess accurately, don't it?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 08:36 am (UTC)(link)as evident by your comments here, yes, yes they do, actually.
Re: da
(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 08:42 am (UTC)(link)If you actually read anything, you'd see that I specified telling people they have privilege and shaming them for it are different things.
Why this doesn't get through to anyone is a mystery.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 08:52 am (UTC)(link)The part in bold - Oh yeah, that sounds nice right there. I like how the author clarifies what "their very being" encompasses, really. Because I would have liked some clarification that doesn't make this sentence look like some kind of suggestion of genocide or something. Fucking hell. Somebody needs to work on their word choice.
