(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)Protip: having gay friends or "supporting gay rights" (and how exactly have you done that? Have you voted for pro-equality legislation? Participated in marches or non-profits? Donated money to equality groups? Or just made a few comments on internet forums?) doesn't mean that you're not a homophobe, just as having friends of a different race doesn't necessarily make you not a racist.
FYI, I'm a woman, and I don't like m/m slash at all. I only read het and f/f slash. And all your comments in ffr definitely made me think you're a homophobe, and a jerk, enough that I took the time to give you a LJ note. I'm sure you'll just ignore this comment and think "I'm right, everyone is wrong, why are they so mean to meeeee," but I figure I'd try anyway. Ponder that.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)I've said before on ffr that there's lots of slash I don't care for. Thing is: I've also explained ~why~ I don't like it. Since ffr is full of LBGT posters, it just seems like the considerate thing to do. Y'know, rather than just writing ~slash is yuck!~ or ~a guy like joe could never sleep with a man because in canon we only saw him sleep with women!!11~
Interestingly enough, I've never had anyone jump on me for saying that lots of slash stuff just doesn't float my boat. Imagine that.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)I've left comments explaining why I don't read it, and no one has ever dogpiled me. I find it really funny how all the complainers say they're being "discriminated against" and have hurt feelings that their ~support~ isn't appreciated when their comments are usually along the lines of "Well, I think slash is completely disgusting, but I support gay rights!!! :)"
I think a lot of them don't realize that not liking something/liking something else better ≠ thinking something is gross/terrible/etc.
(I mean, geez, even if you *are* a raging homophobe, how hard is it is just say something non-asshat like "I prefer m/f if I'm reading porn" or "I don't like those two characters together"?)

worse than Hitler, and your opinion about gay rights is meaningless even if you're for it just because you have a penis and happen to like women.fixed that for you

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)Ah, but if you need to bring up your "cred" to bolster your argument when someone calls you out on being offensive, you're doing something wrong. Nice sidestep there. Bringing it up to prove yourself (like you did yet again in this response) then refusing to elaborate doesn't help your credibility.
But that doesn't mean they're right about everything
Um, nowhere did I say that.
It proves I'm not one of those annoying Christian fundies that can't stand a gay person and will actively stop them from having rights
LOL. Okay, so: 1. being able to "stand" a gay person and "passively" stopping them from having rights DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE NOT A HOMOPHOBE. Saying "At least I'm not as bad as X" DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE NOT A HOMOPHOBE. Try inserting any other group in that sentence and see if that doesn't sound awful.
If you think gay relationships, sex, or people are "gross", "offensive", "icky", or "wrong" (when you don't feel that way about straight people, relationships, or sex) EVEN IF YOU SAY "...but they can do whatever they want." that's still homophobic. Homophobia = negative attitudes towards homosexuality. You can support equality and be a homophobe at the same time.
if you think that makes me homophobic
Nah, what made me think you were homophobic were specific comments you made on ffr. Sadly, the post itself has been deleted, so I can't tell you what specifically your comments were. It was a post about how authors need to "warn for slash". (To head off THAT discussion- in fanfiction etiquette, you only need to "warn" for things that are offensive or potentially triggering. Being gay and/or gay romances are not offensive. If that's not your cup of tea or if you don't like to read it, that's fine. If you think it's offensive, surprise, you're being homophobic.)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)After reading that thread on ffrants that was helpfully posted, I've come to the conclusion that trying to have any sort of productive conversation with you is useless. Thus, this will be my last comment in this thread. But since you did wonder why I thought you were a homophobe, here goes:
1. You think that people need to "warn for (slash) more"
I think I covered this in my comment directly above.
2. Saying "we shouldn't handle gay people with kid gloves like they always get their feelings hurt about everything"
As an admitted person not in this group, why the hell are you speaking for them?
3. Saying that NOT labeling gay content as offensive (i.e. warning for it) is "insulting to gay people"
I don't even know what to say about this one. Here's a hint though. Do you know who decides what is "insulting to gay people"? GAY PEOPLE. (A group that you say you are not part of!) That's simple logic. And again- if you think gay content is "offensive" you're a homophobe.
4. Complaining (yet again) that gay people think they're always right
Hint: Constantly making the same, blanket complaint about a marginalized group IN POSTS ABOUT HOW YOU'RE NOT PREDJUDICED ABOUT THAT GROUP does not make it seem as if you're not prejudiced.
5. Saying slash a kink
Okay, while I understand why people jumped on you for this, I do get that it probably wasn't what you meant. A kink is, very loosely, something that a person finds particularly sexually stimulating. So while I guess (?) someone could say that "reading slash is my kink", slash (i.e. gay content), in and of itself is not a kink. Slash encompasses everything relating to same sex romantic relationships, not just sex. FYI. Reducing it to just that is not cool.
7. Continually bringing up your "gay friends" or your "support for gay rights"
Don't you think that it's kind of strange how you have to keep on bringing this up over and over? Has it crossed your mind that you wouldn't HAVE to do that if your statements weren't hurtful, offensive or homophobic?
8. "im sorry if you're offended"
This is a stupid, bullshit, fake apology. If you're not going to own up to saying something offensive, don't try to turn it around on another person. Take responsibility for your own words. If a whole bunch of people are offended when you "didn't mean it", apologize for offending and look at and rephrase what you said. Unless you're 100% convinced you're right. But then don't complain when people don't agree with you.
9. Your whole general aura of "everyone's oversensitive!" "why is everyone being mean to me!"
OMG. Could you please take responsibility for your own actions? No one forced you to make any of these comments. I saw tons of comments trying to politely explain things to you and/or saying whether you liked slash or not was not the issue. Yet you completely ignored all of them just to complain more about people not liking what you were saying. If you don't WANT to come off as an overprivileged asshat (which I would imagine you don't, since you complained about it enough), try *listening* to other people and entertaining the thought that if 100 people think you're acting like an asshole and you're the 1 that doesn't, the problem is more likely with you than them. Do some fucking research on the topic and why people are offended.
mean, considering your posts, I am absolutely positive that someone must have sent this to you before, but please, please, read through derailingfordummies.com (you might learn something!), particularly the "you're being oversensitive!" bits and try to come up with new arguments.
And again, as a reminder, this is all coming from another straight(ish) person who "doesn't like slash".
