I live in an incredibly diverse area - diverse to the point where more often than not, a joke/miswording/language that might be perceived as "bigoted" is usually given the benefit of the doubt, because the majority of people are part of one minority/historically-oppressed demographic, anyway. So a lot of things which are apparently obvious to most people have never occurred to me because no one here would ever bother correcting me or anyone else on that matter.
i.e. recently I was called out for saying "blacks" rather than "black people". Up until that point, I'd had no idea that some people took that insultingly. That possibility seriously never occurred to me. However, only one person just pointed that out to me explaining the situation - the rest was all ripping apart that one phrasing, as if I'd done it on purpose. :(
