Oh god this is the one thing that bothers me about the movie. I mean, Eric and that old dude with the pipe were served crab right in front of Ariel! AND ONE OF HER FRIENDS IS A CRAB!!! At this point I have to stop thinking in order to enjoy the movie.

Yeah, exactly. I admit my memory of that scene is pretty fuzzy, but unless I'm mistaking she didn't react at all, or barely reacted. I mean, the hell? I'd have ran away screaming or tried to stab them or something.

But we don't know what mer-people ate! And given that Ursula seemed to eat and use animals for makeup, it probably isn't completely unusual?

Well, in TLM animated series, they pretty much only ate seaweed. Seaweed pasta, seaweed pizza, seaweed donuts, ect. Also, Ursula was the villain and that scene where she ate the little shrimp guy was meant to illustrate how evil she is. Oh, and Ariel's best friend was a fish.

Some people keep pigs around as pets (instead of dogs or cats). Doesn't mean lots people don't love bacon. I figured the 'eating the little shrimp guy scene' was more of a repetition of her "taking advantage of those in bad situations" bullying quality, rather than "eating fish is bad".

I just rewatched the movie a few months ago, actually. Ariel couldn't give less of a fuck if she tried.
