Reminds me of one of my OTPs <33

This. I used to read loads of X-Files fanfic and the name thing was one of the issues that kept coming up. In my mind, they were Mulder and Scully. They called each other that in extremely intimate and tough situations, so why shouldn't they call each other that during/after sex?

Same with House and Wilson, Holmes and Watson, all of those.

Holmes and Watson, all of those.

Unless it's Sherlock, of course! They use Sherlock and John to each other, which I thought was kind of odd at first, but I got used to it quickly.

Obviously. I thought that decision was a bit weird at first as well, because John had still been in the Army and Sherlock is still Sherlock so I didn't see any reason why. But on the other hand there wasn't any reason for them to not call each other by their first names. It does grow on you and it sets the series apart from other adaptations.

But it reinforces the point that it's all about what the characters are used to calling each other.

Yeah; I mean, I don't mind the occasional use of Fox or Dana thrown in there. But Mulder and Scully are Mulder and Scully, they've called each other that for years and in every situation. Fics that refer to them as just "Fox and Dana" never quite made sense to me.

[identity profile] piepeloe.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on context. I could totally see Mulder referring to Scully as Dana when he's talking to her mother or someone else in her family, or a close friend of hers outside the FBI. In those cases the person he's talking to thinks of her as Dana, so it's easier for everyone that way. But in Mulder's mind she's Scully so that would be more natural for him. I think it would be pretty similar the other way around, though with a name like Fox I doubt a lot of people think of him that way.

Adding Starsky and Hutch to this. :)

But seriously, I don't understand the whole first names = intimacy thing that some people seem to feel is necessary in fic. I mean, they're only names, right? It's the emotion that matters.

Yup, echoing that for sports RPF (hockey in particular, which is my fandom). Guys are known for calling each other either by their last names or their locker room nicknames, and then suddenly switch to first names as soon as they bone each other. It's such a cliche way for an author to signify ~*~real closeness~*~.

This is also a pretty well-exhausted trope for HP ships.. I can't tell you how many D/H fics I've read where the two principal characters have a BIG MOMENT when they finally consent to calling each other Draco and Harry instead of Malfoy and Potter...

And you have pairings like Peabody/Emerson, where the last names are basically their pet names for each other.
