I think, especially in this fandom, people have characters in their minds and forget sometimes that all the dysfunction and funny misery and OTT-ness ARE JUST the characters. We've got to know them, know how they angst, what makes them happy and so on. So when Noah (just as an example, Doug's nearly crying rant in his review got the same "lol, you're just like Critic now" or "COMFORT! STAT!") does a Vlog as himself, lets loose some personal information but mostly does the whole being driven to drink thing for laughs, the fans are immediately "OMG HE'S BROKEN POOR BABY."

Does that make sense?
