Please tell me you are joking. Famous people are self aware, sentient entities, who are capable of feeling hurt and fear and worrying about their public image. Fictional characters aren't.

I don't even get why people want to confuse fiction and real life. Life is terrifying when you can't tell the two apart.

Please tell me you don't think I meant they're literally characters.

The RPF 99.999% of people write only even vaguely resembles the famous people they're writing about. We know nothing about these people other than what they present to us, and you can pretty much bet that that is a persona. It's completely unlikely an actor/singer/etc goes around completely unguarded and acts towards fans and on cameras how they act at home with family or alone.

Those personas are what we write about, which makes them no more or less than the fictional characters that people with ~higher morals~ than RPF fans write about.

While all fandoms have some crazies, I'm pretty sure the majority of RPF writers do not honestly believe anything they write is even remotely true, logical, or bound to be more based in reality than an episode of their favourite sitcom.

Doesn't mean somebody's daughter would be thrilled to know some asshole out there writes her dad hating his family, using them as a beard and fucking hot costar. Your claim of personas is irrelevant rationalization that no, you couldn't possibly be effecting anybody with your writing. I'll grant the risk is pretty minor, but infinitely bigger then a nonexistent character you can't possibly hurt. So yes, a moral highground can in fact be claimed: The shittiest harry potter fanfic will never hurt Ginny or Harry or Dumbledore or shitty OOC Gay Draco because none of them can be hurt.

holy shit i actually agree with you on something??

my mind, she is blown

The odds of anything that I (or most other RPFers) write hurting the people involved are INFINITELY less than any trash tabloid that's available in millions of stores and seen by millions more people. Tabloids that contain articles that are no less RPF than any actual fic.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I hate tabloids and think they're creepy, and hence I find RPF creepy too.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-29 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I can totally see why some people think it's creepy, but I think rape-fic is creepy, so it always seemed like a big case of YKINMK to me.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
No, not infinite. I can say infinite because infinite works when compared to an actual zero. And your argument was basically just "this RPF is worse then mine!"

It's still RPF. Tabloid RPF is bad too. If you dislike them you should consider that you stand amongst them. Just with less distribution.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-29 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone pointed out below, and I pointed out initially, why is RPF sanctioned when it's tabloid trash or ~intellectual~ books/films? Why is The Persian Boy okay which is basically slashfic, but what we write, now?

Now, understandably, Alexander the Great is not going to come across the book and be offended, but the majority of famous people (unless some crazy emails them their WTFCRAZY rape/bestiality/murder/sex fic) are not going to come across what we write either, though I have heard of some who seek it out out of curiousity.

If they're going and looking for it, it doesn't seem like they care that much about it, or they would just put up a big DNW sign and pretend it doesn't exist.

Like I said, I completely understand that a great deal of people think RPF is creepy. There are a lot of fandom fics I think are creepy, like rapefic, etc, so I'm not going to judge people for not liking something I write.

It's still RPF. Tabloid RPF is bad too. If you dislike them you should consider that you stand amongst them. Just with less distribution.

To me, the BIG difference between tabloids and fanfic, is that I have yet to meet someone who writes RPF that think what they write is true (or where their readers think it's true), whereas tabloids are constantly being referenced by people who are looking for reasons to dislike a celebrity. "Oh my god, did you see in *this magazine*, so and so is cheating on their wife!!"

Tabloids are RPF, sure, but they're taken as truth by a lot of idiots, whereas fanfic is seen by most as nothing more than entertainment. To me, that's where the distinction lies.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-29 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Does that make it less creepy when people write rape fic about real people and talk about how hot it is? Because I think that's pretty fucking creepy.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
She means that what we see, their public persona, is pretty much a fabrication made by PR agents and magazines. We don't really know those people, we just know a created image of them.
