"If they're lucky they grow up to be cultural anthropologists."
I can see this being interesting for awhile. But when you keep seeing people doing the same stupid stuff over and over again, and not being able to intervene, you don't think that would get to you? Also, to whom would you describe your findings and observations? Seems like something that could hold interest for awhile, but not for time immortal. Besides, you'd always be a few steps behind the current fashion, trends, technology unless you made friends in the present.

Eh, that's what Internet is for.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-29 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)Sure, why not? Some people are the life of the party and some feel drained at just the thought. A quiet life might suit the latter just fine.
But when you keep seeing people doing the same stupid stuff over and over again,
The world is wide and it keeps changing. That's what makes CA fun. As for not being able to intervene, I think you're really drawing too hard a line on it. There are any number of ways to get things in motion, especially these days, from video conferencing to dropping an anonymous helpline tip. Move around, steal or forge an identity or two, pop up in prominence every couple hundred years, cause much mayhem or good as the mood takes you and slip away into obscurity to cackle over the fallout. Check out Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's St. Germain stories to see at least one example of how a vamp might traverse the centuries in a public fashion.
Also, to whom would you describe your findings and observations?
If somebody turned you, there's got to be other vampires out there. Find them.
Besides, you'd always be a few steps behind the current fashion, trends, technology unless you made friends in the present.
Considering that there are people on this earth living very mortal lifespans who already don't give a shit, that's hardly an issue. Maybe vampiric immortality isn't for you, but you're not everyone.
