People eat rabbits all the damn time.

Also, I hate it when people act like some animals are okay to kill and some aren't. Unless you're talking threatened or endangered species, as long as you're okay with killing one animal you should be okay with killing any of them as far as I'm concerned. Why arbitrarily discriminate?

I'll freely admit that I'm a hypocrite in that I would never knowingly touch dog meat unless I was literally dying of starvation, but pretty much everything else is fair game. I've had dogs, and only dogs, as pets my entire life, and they possess a special status in my sight.

And yet, at the same time I realize that distinction is arbitrary and I am in no way morally superior to people from cultures in which eating dogs is normal.

Well, this is true regarding dogs and cats and other animals commonly kept as pets. I'm certainly not saying I'd kill and eat my dog, just that I don't think that a dog's life is intrinsically more valuable than a cow's. And I do notice that a lot of these kind of arguments regarding fur or whatever involve outrage over "cute" animals being killed for their skin. Rabbits are pretty common animals that breed constantly, have lots of offspring and are even considered pests in some areas, it's not like the most common species used for fur are endangered (I use rabbits as an example because most of the fur I've come across has been rabbit fur)

I arbitrarily discriminate on this issue all the damn time-- I have a leather winter coat but I won't buy a rabbit fur hat, no matter how cute they are-- because cuddly bunnies and stinky cows aren't the same thing. However, I wouldn't hold it against someone if they DID want to wear a rabbit hat, and I'm sure they'd look fabulous. I just wouldn't do it myself. It's perfectly okay to hold an opinion about something without *forcing it on someone else*. People should try to realize that more often.

I think actually discriminating on the basis of intelligence makes a lot of sense. I won't eat octopus because I don't feel comfortable eating anything that is smart enough to do what they do. I wouldn't eat dolphin or whale.

I also understand not wanting to eat the same species that is your pet. I don't want to eat a cat.

What is stupid is discriminating on cuteness alone, like fluffy bunnies or something.

Well, now that you mention it, I don't get how people can eat turtles for food since turtles can live longer than humans, it just seems wrong

But, like you said, I don't JUDGE other people who eat turtles (unless the turtle species in question is an endangered or threatened species or something). And I don't think turtles' lives matter more than cows (which I eat all the time).
