I'm strongly against wearing fur and always have been. Growing up in the US, it seems barbaric and very outdated.

BUT - and I do hate to say this, and I don't want it to seem like I'm condoning the wearing of fur, because of course I still think it's appalling - but I live in Japan now, and it's honestly not viewed in the same way at all. Fur is fashionable and popular and definitely not outdated, and come wintertime, you see it everywhere. It was unbelievably shocking to me the first year I was here, and it's still horrible some years later. But it is a cultural difference. Not a great cultural difference, obviously, but one that exists. Should fans be defending her and calling other people racist for not "respecting her culture"? Absolutely not. There's nothing to respect about wearing fur. But perhaps a little cultural understanding is necessary; her remark about wanting to wear fur is horrifying from the perspective of a lot of countries, but it's just not in Japan. There's basically no anti-fur movement here, no one telling anyone why it's wrong, so a lot of people honestly don't understand or realize that it could be seen as wrong. It's just a fashion thing. I hope it changes in future, but for now her remark just seems very typically Japanese to me. I'm disappointed that she said it, but I can understand why she did.

Would all of you just stop that argument, please? I grew up in the US, on a ranch in Wyoming. Guess what? Fur sure isn't outdated or barbaric out here, so stop painting all states in the US with the same anti-fur brush.

Sorry, I should have said in my part of the US. Of course I realize that not every state is the same, and I'm very much unqualified to speak for the country as a whole.
