The major cause of the wolverine's decline has been habitat destruction and persecution from farmers.

Yeah. And that doesn't help either, but it's the fur trade which was a major cause.

But since you agree that habitat destruction and farming is putting the population under stress, and not just of the Wolverine but other species - than it can only be good for the remaining population to not be trapped and killed for the fur industry. Or am I being too logical for you?

Oh, and before you think I'm a bleeding heart animal rights person, I eat kangaroo. I'm quite happy to eat wildlife which isn't endangered.

Everything I can find in wildlife journals suggests that habitat destruction was the major driver, mostly because of their natural low density.

There's a difference between "unregulated hunting of an endangered species is bad" (yes) and "hunting is what drove that species to extinction" (no). Regulated hunting that creates funds for habitat preservation may actually increase populations, as in saltwater crocodiles.
