superficial? as in, 'fake'? but why??

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of surprised to find out somebody still in this fandom has this opinion, as everybody's favorite seems to be SuzaLulu yeah.

I dunno, I do kind of see your point because I think a summer-long or year-long friendship as children doesn't mean two people are super-close soul mates as adults (and I mean in any sense, platonic or not) and it does seem like they kind of look back on that friendship with rose-tinted glasses when they're teenagers. They don't spend a lot of time together or have common interests really.
But they also do show a lot of closeness and understanding. Like the fact that Suzaku can tell Lelouch is lying to make himself look worse than he is in The Taste of Humiliation. Like the fact that Lelouch became Zero to save Suzaku from execution, and the fact that Suzaku died to save Lelouch in episode 1. The fact that Lelouch is willing to let Suzaku be the knight of his beloved little sister and how crushed he is when it turns out Suzaku is his enemy, and how obsessed Suzaku is with Lelouch. And of course the fact that Lelouch trusts Suzaku and only Suzaku to carry out Zero Requiem and carry on Zero himself.

And the whole "but..." part of your comment is what undermines the OP's statement. Yeah, a summer-/year-long friendship isn't much to work from (although arguably working with someone to get through a warzone will bring you quite close to them), but they still both invested a lot in that relationship.

.....Are you serious?

Most of the people who ship them are superficial, don't blame the characters for that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
lolwat

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yea, fandom likes to overrate the relationship two characters with dicks have with one another.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
it might not have been ~TWU WUV~ but they were pretty obsessed with each other

i mean i pretty much only watched geass for the subtext lol

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Part of why I was so drawn to them was the fact that they don't understand each other. Seriously, if they were just honest with each other, things probably wouldn't have gone so pear-shaped.

Then again, it is a pretty melodramatic CLAMP anime so I respect your different opinion. They really don't have much of a friendship, that's true.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
But CLAMP didn't do anything but the character designs.

If the relationship came off as superficial to you, then that's a problem with the writing. I believe they were "meant" to be seen as close, albeit in a nontraditional way. Their friendship and the fluctuating conflict between them is kind of central to the show.

Obviously, there is no denying that the, uh, exploration of their relationship dominates the fandom, so I can understand the sentiment. (That would be code for "I don't ship it, either.")

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree that it's a problem with the writing. I think the writers would have done better to use the "show not tell" method to illustrate their friendship (show them in R1 talking more, hanging out more, etc.) As it was, there really is not enough evidence to explain why they are so obsessed with each other. On the other hand, neither of these boys strike me as having very many other friends, so we could take their obsession as a manifestation of alienation or sanity slippage. Lelouch, in particular, strikes me as the obsessive type in general.

Personally, I "ship it" soulmate wise (whether or not canon necessarily supports it) but not necessarily sexually/romantically, though I am okay with that, too. I avoid the fandom, mostly because I'm a newbie.

If you've read some of the interviews from the creators, you actually have a point - if you are referring to the first season. During the first season, they were acting like BFFs, and yet lying their faces off to one another, doing a whole lot of projection about what they thought the relationship should be, and in Lelouch's case shameless trying to manipulate Suzaku into being what he wanted. And that was the entire point, that they were pretending their friendship was perfectly fine and ignoring all the problems.

The entire point of Zero Requiem at the end was that Suzaku and Lelouch were finally the great friends they had pretended to be at the start, because they are finally honest and understanding of one another.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP. I mean, I can see how they make an attractive couple to ship, and I tried to get into it; but it just ends up feeling flat and fake. So I can't commit 100%. (Plus I think they both have better chemistry with the female characters.) Something about it is rather forced, even though it's an important relationship plot-wise.
