Rosie's character was a lot more self-confident, and I think that made the difference.

oh, I love this movie!

I think the problem with Marla (?) wasn't only her looks; her lack of confidence and her body language didn't help to make her attractive. On the other side, maybe Rosie O'Donnell's character wasn't a beauty, but she was very confident and had a lot of spark and that people, men and women, usually like that.

Yep, definitely agree with all this. With Marla, a lot of it was body language, the way she was often hunching over as if she could disappear into herself or not reading social cues very well. It seemed to just end up drawing more negative attention to her.

All of this, and also its how they dressed, Marla dressed rather dowdy, and... manish. While Doris dressed like a girl, and wore the proper fashions and what not.

Charisma goes a surprisingly long way. If you've got boatloads of it it really doesn't matter what the fuck you look like tbh.
