Being true to yourself doesn't excuse being a terrible person. Most people would be assholes if they weren't disciplined and taught that it's wrong.

But I also feel sorry when characters like that get their karma, though. I just don't like seeing people being miserable. :\

For me it really depends on what kind of a jerk character you're talking about (icon very related). Like if it's just someone who's rude and socially awkward who speaks their mind and gets shit on for it, I feel bad for those sorts of characters. But jerk characters who do shitty things for other people? I don't feel bad when they get their comeuppance.

Me too, but I just get really uncomfortable when bad things happen to characters in general. If I've watched a show or movie already and know what's going to happen, I generally turn it off because it's too uncomfortable :/
