definitely not the only one, OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
...now there's a more flattering picture :)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in all fairness you can thank her for the tent pegs.

I guess I wouldn't want to see it be her only legacy either but she did say it.

Captcha, I don't have Greek on my keyboard, thanks.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, Afra marrying Damia really is so fucking creepy now that I'm no longer ten. He used to change her fucking diapers, for crying out loud. But if there's three constants in McCaffrey's novels, it's rape=true love, older men marrying much younger women, and bigger is always better. Your id, Anne. We could see it.

[identity profile] nakki.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
+1 This comment is fantastic =D

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that statement was really... unfortunate.

Even though I think she's a jerk, I can't help feeling kinda bad for her. She seemed like she was just speaking off the cuff and had no idea it would wind up being a permanent part of her public image.
The internet is a scary thing sometimes.

[identity profile] tenebrais.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think I've come to the conclusion that McCaffrey just looks like she should be ruling over an empire with an iron fist.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome!

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh op, when I told my sister that she died

the first thing she said was

"I guess we don't have to worry about tent pegs anymore."

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this was probably my second thought. My first was how the Pern series pretty much got me into fantasy and sci-fi, shaped my writing for over a decade, got me into internet fandom... basically made me the nerd I am today.

;__;

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my first thought was of a poster of a gold and a bronze flying together that I used to have on my wall as a teen, and how much that image meant to me, and the second was the tent peg thing. *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have never read these books, so maybe I don't have the right to comment on this, but I went and looked this incident up (it seemed so incongruous that I was curious), and ohhhh my goooood.

I'm sorry, but I'm not surprised if the fandom brings this up constantly or makes a big deal of it or whatever. That was some comment. I only read a transcript, but the comment combined with the absolute confidence and authority of the phrasing was so damn disturbing.

This is why I often try to avoid interviews with writers and general celebrities. Sometimes their personalities and opinions are just too damn horrifying.

[identity profile] stepstostars.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I loved so many of her novels when I was younger, not just Dragonriders, I really liked the Crystal Singer trilogy (idk if anyone else does, I haven't met anyone in RL who's even heard of her before :|).

Her world was the first utopia I enjoyed (until I met Star Trek, heyy), and (in Pern) the way she mixed science into what seemed like such a feudal society was so fascinating.

Because idek, her vague sex scenes in her series were my first introduction to smut/porn. They seemed so much dirtier when I first read them...

...and then I recently read about the Tent Peg.

[identity profile] nakki.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
The Crystal Singer books are definitely my favourite of hers. I'm pretty much the woman I am today because Killashandra was my hero as a kid =D

Her sex scenes are still really hawt. Not so much the creepiness of her homosexual scenes, but the heterosexual ones are really great.

I remember hearing/reading about the tent pegs when I was like 11 and laughing sooooo hard because I knew that was completely frelled up and wrong even then :P

[identity profile] stepstostars.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
! Killashandra was kickass, although the whole slave-mindset-like-thing with the crystal thrall is kind of creepy when I think of it now. But she always joined these awesome ideas, like music and pretty crystals, and sdjksfa, oh McCaffrey. (:

Waitwhat, she wrote homosexual sex scenes? I sort-of remember a scene with a blue/green rider pairing that almost got mauled by those genetically modified leopards, but...what? @@; I did like her heterosexual ones when I was a kid, though, though now I get to laugh at how innocent I was back then...

Hahaaha, when I read about the story, I didn't know whether to laugh or be outraged/confused, it was just...idek. xD;

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, someone who knows about Crystal Singer! I loved the first one and had read it a truly absurd number of times before I ever realized it was a trilogy. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into the second book...

Crystal Singer is still my favorite book, though. Upon hearing that she'd died, my first thought was "aww hey, I should reread Crystal Singer."

...

My second thought was tent pegs.
(Frankly, though, I forgave her for that long ago. She was about my grandmother's age, and at least she acknowledged the existence of homosexuality in a reasonably positive light - my grandmother, on the other hand, feels that it is some kind of corruption. And so does my aunt, who doesn't even have the excuse of age.)

[identity profile] stepstostars.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yess! It was one of the other series she wrote that had a summary I found interesting in the slightest.

The Masterharper of Pern is and always will be my favorite. <3 I just love Robinton. I'll join you in a rereading spree, though!...if my uni has her books.

--

Yeah, she was a product of her time, and I never really hated her for her beliefs, (unlike Orson Scott Card, Speaker of the Dead will never be the same...). I mean, my parents completely disapprove of gay marriage. She was a little bit better, at least, even if only by a small step.

I loved the Crystal Singer books, though I haven't read them since I was a teen. Honestly, I loved a lot of books when I was a teen that I'm kind of scared to go back and re-read. *cough*why hello there, Piers Anthony*cough*

Oddly, I managed to read every major series of hers EXCEPT Pern. -_-

[identity profile] stepstostars.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
...is Piers Anthony the guy who's written like, BILLIONS of books? His summaries seem so generic fantasy and ridiculously outlandish, I could never bring myself to ever try to read one. >>;

...and yeah, I've only reread some of her Pern books recently, and they came off as much better when I was younger. I still love her worldbuilding, though, oh god, her worldbuilding is so prettyy~

But PERN! I'd recommend starting with the Dragonsong/Dragonsinger/Dragondrums trilogy if you ever decide to read them. Harpers are as awesome as the actual dragonriders, in my opinion. >>;

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, OP, I thought of the tent pegs first too.
