I love Rifftrax, but not every Rifftrax. The Iron Man one could not stop with all the "Hey, did you know Robert Downey Jr. was, like, JAILED FOR DRUG USE" jokes. PICK SOMETHING MORE SUBTLE, GUYS.

(But I like all the Twilight Rifftraxes. "LINE." "LIIINE!")

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Frankly I barely payed attention to the riffs when I watched it. The combination of the jokes from people I was watching it (well, streaming it with) + the movies just being bad in a way that's absolutely fascinating to me pretty much distracted me. But I didn't get the impression that it was their best effort.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
honestly i have never really enjoyed rifftrax and this one in particular sounds insufferable

ymmv i guess

[identity profile] talyafera.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's disappointing. I would have expected better from them.

Yeah, those jokes turned me off, too. I still managed to find the Twilight riffs funny because there were enough other jokes that made me laugh, but I wish they wouldn't rely on OMG THIS IS SO GAY as a humor go-to because that's really not what's wrong with the Twilight franchise (nor is being gay wrong in any other respect) and that's just a really lazy excuse for a joke, honestly.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. I think I've said the words "That's really not the problem here" about Twilight about fifty times just recently. People focus on all the wrong things when they criticize Twilight. The problem isn't "teh gay" or the sparkling (the jokes about sparkling stopped being funny a long long time ago), or even the corniness (although it's fine to make fun of the corniness if you leave out homophobic jokes; unfortunately, most parody-ers seem incapable of this)- it's the problematic, anti-feminist stuff and the romanticization of an unhealthy relationship.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
also a problem: it's really, really bad

and, yeah, abusive and all that stuff too

Mostly I just find the movies boring as hell. The only way I could watch them at all was to watch them with the Rifftrax, otherwise I would just fall asleep.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight and New Moon are actually among my favorites, but Eclipse almost put me to sleep (that may have been the movie itself though).

That Benny Hill bit in the first one killed me.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
All I've seen from it was the 10-minute Best Of on youtube, but I'm not gonna lie, the lyrics one of em came up with for that song Edward plays Bella made me almost pee myself laughing.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, the part when Edward picks Bella up and gives her a piggyback ride through the forest complete with the Benny Hill theme makes me spit-take every time I think of it xD

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! That's one of my favorite parts and was genius, not gonna lie.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember those jokes, just ones about how creepy Ed was and how bored Bella looked. I found it funny, but I can see why what you mentioned would be a turn off.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, although they did do a good job of pointing out that Jacob had, you know, sexually-assaulted Bella. They also took the high road during a rape scene and pointed out how shoehorned in and insensitive it was, rather than joking. (Sorry, don't really know which movie is which. They all blend together for me.)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about the Rosalie thing (in Eclipse)? Yeah, that was pretty stupid. Somehow Meyer managed to make her whole situation even worse in the book, where Rosalie takes great pain to mention that she was beautiful and had a perfect life but the only thing that would have given her life meaning was a baby. Hilariously, she mentions that the thing that first drew her to Emmett was the fact that he looked just like she imagined her son would. And then they banged (after getting married of course). Ew.

The only part I kind of liked about Rosalie's flashback in the movie was that she got to kill all of her rapists while in a wedding dress. I would have rather watched that movie

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of those situations where they had prime material to work with and so much potential and they wasted it :/

I really do love Rifftrax, but Mike and the guys can be mean spirited at times and sometimes go for the cheaper laughs, especially when it comes to gender norms/masculinity (or what they perceive as a lack there of) and weight. Twilight isn't the only example of this and I think you can see some of this attitude in the later years of MST3K. That said, I thought the Twilight one did a good job of pointing out just how much of the film is dead air (like the car scene where they're just like "Line?") and how awful Bella treats her friends. But yes, I completely understand where you're coming from OP and it makes me sad too.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I do love the Twilight Rifftrax, but there were some comments that I rolled my eyes at and didn't find that funny, like the "girls, your boyfriend will never do x." I did find enough in it that I found funny, so YMMV I guess.

Also, I get annoyed when they made jokes about old people I have no clue about. The only people I know that would get those jokes wouldn't be watching Rifftrax in the first place and sometimes they make a lot of them. They try to keep each other in check about that but sometimes it's ridiculous and I lose interest.

[identity profile] edgyspice.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the Twilight riffs, but you make a really good point. It bugs me when they make mean jokes about feminine guys or other stuff like that.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all of it was gold, but there were enough absolutely hilarious moments for me to consider it awesome. Not to mention that the gang part makes me giggle every time:

"But where is she going?!"
"Yes we must know! Please! We have no other reason to cohere as a group!"
