If there's any good reason to lie to a friend, this is it! I don't see that lying is doing her any harm... especially because sometimes we take compliments from strangers more seriously, whereas we think our friends are just saying it to be nice, no matter how sincere they are. Telling her the truth at this point might just make it awkward, and she might believe the compliments were just out of pity if she knew they were really coming from a friend...

I feel like your shoulder devil, encouraging you to lie. But seriously, I think there's a place for white lies, and this is one of them. You sound like a very nice person, OP!
