if you are fat, attempting to cosplay a skinny character, it will look wrong. and yeah you know what it is a bit weird to see white people dressed as japanese characters, black people dressed as white characters etc.
if you're dressing up as someone for halloween, i'm sure no one will give any fucks about how you really look. cosplay is like racking up the nerdiness to the next level and accuracy is important. deal. with. it.
