Do you think "homophobic" sounds like a joke, too?*

* Disclaimer: I do not mean to imply that fatphobia and homophobia are in any way comparable. I am merely commenting on the similarity of the words.

New anon, I think it's kinda sad that you have to include that disclaimer :(

personally I'd just call it "fat-hating"

Just coverin' my back, anon. :P

I personally don't think that "fat-hating" really incorporates and implies the systematic bigotry against fat people in the same way that "fatphobia" does. "Fat-hating" sounds individual, base-level, whereas "fatphobia" more accurately implies cultural and societal level bigotry and discrimination. Hence why I use the latter.

ayrt

Actually, no I do not. Why? Because both of the original words that "homophobic/homophobia" come from are the same language.

"Fat" is English whereas "phobia" is Greek, which makes "fatphobia" sound insufferably clashy.

Well, it's the best we've got, as there really is no good alternative, so...

While this is technically true, the "homo-" in "homophobia" is specifically referring to the "homo-" in "homosexual," which is a Greek/Latin barbarous hybrid (the one-source terms would be either "homophilia" or something like "similisexual"). So you can't really say this is something English doesn't do with some regularity.

Besides, "lipophobia" or "pachyphobia" sound pretty silly, too.
