I know I recommend this manga-ka all the time, but it's cause I love her so darn much.

Kano Miyamoto is amazing. She's one of my all time favorite manga artists. Her Rules Universe (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2325) (or here (http://www.liquideros.com/project_timeline-rules.html)) is stunning. And yeah, I know that, by reading the summary, you'll probably be thinking "oh gosh, not another one of those!", but I swear she's not like every other BL artist out there. Her works are unique and, best of all, has actual realism. The characters are all so very human and it's fabulous.

She has two other universes (Calling (http://www.liquideros.com/project_timeline-calling.html) and Walker (http://www.liquideros.com/project_timeline-walker.html)) that are just incredible. And what's so amazing about them is that they all overlap. So side characters from "Rules" will have prominent roles in "Calling", and so on.

Her works deal with coming out (from teens to adults), general homosexuality issues, bisexuality (there are a number of bi-characters in here), drug addiction, prostitution, infidelity, abuse, being stuck in unhealthy relationships, being homeless, suicide, self-harming, mental instability, family issues, school pressure (academically and socially), "forbidden" love, and so on. REAL stuff, in other words. And it's not downplayed or anything like that. Each character has his or her own issue, and Miyamoto does her best to deal with them realistically.

I mentioned a lot of heavy stuff, but there are stories that are really romantic and fluffy, too (but even those aren't overly sappy, so if that's your thing you should be aware). There's always romance to be found in her works, but that's not the entire focus. It's so much more than that.

Honestly, I say give it a shot. If what I mentioned above isn't your kind of thing (believe me, if someone else had told me to read something like that I wouldn't, either) I still recommend giving one or two of her stories a shot. They are remarkable. And the art is great, to boot!

Um. [livejournal.com profile] miyamoto_kano is a great place to go if you have any questions. Or you can just ask me. Whatever. She has a lot of stuff so those just getting in tend to be overwhelmed at first (I was). So worth it, though.

Another manga-ka I'm really fond of is Hyouta Fujiyama. I buy pretty much every manga of hers as soon as it gets licensed. Her works have a very mature quality (even the humorous ones) that I really enjoy.

You should also look into Chigusa Kawai's "La Esperanca". Not your typical shounen-ai manga at all. Mainly revolves around the destruction and renewal of the main character's (plural) faith (religious and general faith in mankind), but there's a lot more to it, too. As a bonus it can be really darn funny without being stupid, and that's something I appreciate. It has a plot (that just gives it major bonus points right there) and the characters are all fabulous. It's a really nice read.

It was mentioned above, but the anime No.6 is really fabulous. You might also really like Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Cristo" (*see icon*). And if sports are your thing, you might also enjoy Ookiku Furikabutte (baseball).
