I think it's pretty clear throughout the course of the books that he had no control over that part at all. Especially since killing your pregnant wife would be looked down upon even in oblivious Forks! Besides can you imagine the shitstorm that storyline would produce? Better that she lived to be an idiot, tbh.

That would require him having a set. And after he let his underage daughter whine for months about a boy she just met to the point of sickness, it's pretty clear he never had any.
