Um, actually...
Not all black people were slaves. They didn't have any humane rights, but they weren't all slaves. And since Emily is from a long line of witches, it's possible she wasn't a slave like pretty much everyone else.

...but weren't handmaidens people who had to do whatever their mistress/princess/queen asked them to do? Handmaiden is a high class servant position, as I understand it. Wikipedia says "a man might use a handmaiden as a concubine to bear his child if his wife was infertile. For example, the biblical Rachel, the childless wife of Jacob, gave her handmaid Bilhah to her husband to produce children for her. Jacob's first wife Leah later did the same.[3]"

So, yeah. What's your point? Handmaidens were a thing, and they were treated like slaves.

Emily served as Catherine's handmaiden, because she owed a life-debt to her. She was an extremely powerful witch- that she was black, and existed in a time where slavery was a-okay, is incidental. She wasn't a slave because she wasn't. I haven't read the books, but I think this was pretty obvious. Do you mean she was a slave in the sense that she had to do Catherine's bidding? Catherine saved her life, and she was honoring that.

I understand where you're coming from, but it's obvious your assumption is based on her skin color, and the era this took place in. And not much else.

TVD actually mentions slavery quite a few times- the dungeon Tyler goes to for changing into a wolf has chains specifically said to have held slaves, and Jenna, when researching the town, definitely mentions slavery.

Anyway, agree with above; if Emily was a slave, the show would have said. The reason they gave wasn't because they're cowards.

Oh, because she also played a character named Maya on Pretty Little Liars, who dates a main character, Emily. Tbh, when I was first scrolling through the secret post, my first thought was OH HEY MAYA when I first saw her. /lame
