There were many who thought Castiel was terrible for saying that and didn't think it was funny at all. Not all Sam fans dislike Cas, but it's not unusual to find people who think Castiel's got a lot to answer for when it comes to Sam.

I adore Cas, and can pretty much take or leave Sam, but YES.

It's not God you're going to have to worry about answering to, Castiel.

I didn't find it funny either, OP.

He was saying according to heaven, not his personal opinion. Cas and Dean were considered servants of Heaven till they told heaven to fuck off. Sam was never considered on Heaven's side because he was the boy with demon blood and an abomination.

He was being blunt like he always does and yeah he hurts feeling or makes things worse when he does. Like when Dean was worried he'd become brain dead like Rapheal's vessel Cas told him he'd get even more fucked up.

Both times he was wrong btw. Dean was enough of a servant of Heaven to do the deed and Micheal said Dean wouldn't end of brain dead

Definitely thought it was sad/not funny. Then again, Sam is my favorite character and I fairly okay with Cas, so I really don't hate any parties. (Or maybe since I like Sam the most, it makes me biased?)

Still! I can never get over those puppy-dog eyes he occasionally has. <3

Cas called Sam an abomination after losing his faith in God, his own father, and drinking an entire liquor store. Losing his few social graces it to be expected, you realize.

I think his lack of social grace is the one thing he didn't lose. He waited until being a megalomaniac to lose that.

Am I the only one who thought he had pigtails in this picture? I am? Well... This is awkward.

That was supposed to be funny? Anything in that episode was supposed to be funny?

Supernatural is really good at this thing where there are moments that are funny until you think about them, especially in context, and you realize how depressing they are. Even the funniest part of that episode, "I found a liquor store./AND I DRANK IT", is heartbreaking when you realize it shows how far Cas has fallen from his absolute faith and confidence in his righteousness in his first few appearances. Like many things about that show, they're meant to be funny on the surface to the viewers but not at all to the characters.

And Castiel was certainly not trying to be funny, he's just completely wrecked from everything and he's always been excessively direct. It didn't make me dislike him, but does anyone actually think it was a nice or funny thing for him to say? They can all be jerks at times. It's SPN.

I didn't think that scene was sad. But I always thought the scene where Sam is excited to meet an angel, and Castiel just brushes him off, was quite sad.

Come on, it's Castiel in his early stages of learning about humanity. You expect him to have tact? He pretty much parroted the words Heaven had been telling him since Sam came into the picture. Considering his non-existent "people skills" I don't think even Sam took offence.

Castiel's delivery was a little giggle-inducing - so deadpan, so matter-of-fact. But the scene it self was not amusing, and yeah - Sam was hurt. Like the scene when he first met Castiel and for a long moment Castiel wouldn't take his hand and Sam was looking more and more devastated....

The way Castiel delivered it, in his classic deadpan way, was funny, not so much the statement itself, if that makes sense. He isn't human, he has no clue what tact is, and he is very blunt with both of the brothers. This is nothing new. Also, as it's been mentioned, I doubt it was a personal opinion, but just a fact statement - according to Heaven and the angels, Sam was in fact an abomination. Something about all that demon blood, you know...and the whole destined-to-be-Lucifer's-vessel thing.

Sam's my favorite character and while I think Cas had done some shitty things to Sam, I don't think that was one of them. He was explaining why no one in the room could kill the girl. Sam was by heaven's definition an abomination; it wasn't personal. I think Sam was really just upset that he was an abomination as most people would be, not that Cas said it.

I was a bit heartbroken too. Poor Sammy always gets shit for his demon blood and it's not like it's his fault anyway. I thought it really rude that the one person he believed wouldn't judge him, had the nerve to actually say that. Even Dean never went there & he says some pretty shitty things sometimes.

Also, I just realised that the face Cas made when Dean called him a baby in a trenchcoat, is simmilar to the one Sam made here.
