Can't contain my love for Bucky Barnes, man.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
BUCKY *_*

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not first time in five years, but I'm excited! A Brubaker title not on a HUGE player (which gives him more freedom. Not that he isn't good on Captain America).

Plus, Bucky isn't dead...again. That definitely makes me excited! ^_^v

[identity profile] zerstoerung.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
...ah shoot, this is what happens when I ignore major events.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The major event just returned Steve to the role as Cap so the title could exist, which is much better than what it SEEMED to be, which is that they killed Bucky so Steve could have the shield again. That sucked.

[identity profile] tiffanynichelle.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It is going to be so good. It's Brubaker. It has to be!

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I had your faith. I love Brubaker, and the things he's done with Bucky and the Captain America title are spectacular, as is most of his non-Marvel/cape stuff.

But I've been burned by amazing writers before, and can't actually bring myself to be excited for this title when the means to getting Bucky into position for it were so heavy-handed.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Because it actually made me severely disappointed. Sure, marvel cancels all solo series of PoCs, LGTBs and women, but they bring back another white, straight male hero! Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
See, for me Marvel is about the ensemble casts, though. And they've got plenty of diversity in most of those. The X-Men titles have women, PoCs, LGBT and everything else. Same for the Avengers.

And I will take a secondary Monet over a primary nu!Catwoman any day.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
This. I've always loved how diverse Marvel casts can be-- Young Avengers, New Avengers, X-Factor, New X-Men, etc. All fucking amazing.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the Marvel characters tend to be more true to their diversity, too. They're not just playing lip-service. The Falcon's philosophies represent what his life was like, the Young Avengers go up against white supremacists ("To be fair, they also hate gays and mouthy women!"). Monet was fairly casual and yet sincere discussing her religion.

(But, then, I don't really care about whose name is on the cover of the book, as long as the characters inside are interesting, sincere and heroic. I'm a lesbian woman. It doesn't mean I only want to see Karolina all the time because she's "like me". )

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
These are prime examples as to why books like X-Factor are being recognized and winning awards-- Because they support sincere representation and the characters are relateable.

(And I'd probably consider Xavin a more interesting POC/LGBT example than Karloina)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just really hope the cuts don't mean we lose that diversity and relatability. Captain America, Iron Man and Thor will always sell, especially now with the movies. While I am not annoyed by the lack of solo titles, the way the OP of this particular thread seemingly was, it would suck to see the good characters in the ensemble casts disappear because of whatever "budgetary mandates" it was that meant the end for X-23 and Alpha Flight.

(TBH, I don't even like Runaways and most of my knowledge of them comes from the two Runaways/YA teamups). I have been told that makes me a bad lesbian comic fan. ._. )

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. I'm hoping X-23 will end up back on a teen X-Men team (we need a New X-Men reunion; without Guggenheim shitting all over the concept). I'm mostly disappointed at the lack of a Ms. Marvel ongoing. I looooved her comic.

Also: Wtf Alpha Flight got cancelled? Wasn't Marvel bragging about how well that comic was doing?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
X-23 is supposed to be joining the Avengers Academy team, iirc. I wonder if maybe the April event is going to be used to rearrange the X-Men into new teams.

Nobody is quite sure what happened to Alpha Flight. It just disappeared, and Marvel was all "Uh, yeah. We changed our minds lawl!". But at least it was only about the ongoing. They're still letting the original mini-series finish, and Lente and Pak had always intended the same ending for that even with the supposed long-term series.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I mainly read Marvel for the teams, too, but it's still annoys me that all the solo series they have are of white, straight, males. And that they keep cancelling all of those who aren't of this type. (And before you say anything about sales, I'll just remind you that X-23 was selling better than Generation Hope, Avengers Academy and X-Factor and it still got canceled, and that the only reason they canceled Ms. Marvel was because the writer left, not because it was selling poorly).

DA

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I think that may just be the way it has to be. Comics, like it or not, are a floundering industry. And the LGBT/non-male/minority community has been reading about the white hetero-normative guys for decades and have shown themselves willing to do so, whereas the white, hetero-normative males tend to not be nearly as willing to read the other.

We've also not been in the room for the reasons why it was cancelled, re:X-23. Maybe, like Ms Marvel, it was a creator thing. There's also the fact that even those it's selling better than some other titles, those sales have also been declining for months.
